Fortunate to appear before court in Babri Masjid demolition case: Sakshi Maharaj

IANS
BJP leader Sakshi Maharaj on Tuesday asserted that no force on earth can stop the construction of the biggest Ram temple in Ayodhya and said he was fortunate to appear in front of a special CBI court in the Babri Masjid demolition case.
“No force on earth can stop the construction of Ram temple in Ayodhya,” Sakshi Maharaj said after arriving at the court here.
“I didn’t do anything wrong. In fact, I was fortunate to be part of that as it was a pious thing to do,” he said.
The Bharatiya Janata Party leader also said that Ayodhya should not be remembered for the mosque but as the birthplace of Lord Ram.
“Don’t be mad, there was no Babri mosque. Babar was a foreigner who had nothing to do with India. You people (media) should not repeatedly call it ‘Babri’. It was, it is and it will remain Ram Janmbhoomi (birthplace),” Sakshi Maharaj said.
Asked if he had any role in demolishing the mosque, the BJP MP from Uttar Pradesh’s Unnao also said: “There was no structure, but there was a small Ram temple, so we tried to make a new temple.”
Beside Sakshi Maharaj, senior BJP leaders L.K. Advani, Murli Manohar Joshi and Union Minister Uma Bharti will appear before the court where charges will be framed against them for their alleged role in the demolition of the mosque in 1992.
Charges would also be framed against Sadhvi Ritambhara, Bharatiya Janata Party MP Vinay Katiyar and Vishwa Hindu Parishad leader Vishnu Hari Dalmia.
Last week, counsel of the accused had moved a plea in the court to exempt Advani, Joshi and Bharti from personal appearance, but it was turned down.
Charges against six others accused in the matter — Mahant Ram Vilas Vedanti, Mahant Nritya Gopal Das, Baikunth Lal Sharma, Dharm Das, Champat Rai Bansal and Shiv Sena’s Satish Pradhan, who were granted bail — will also be framed on Tuesday.
All the accused are facing charges of conspiring to bring down the mosque.
The Central Bureau of Investigation had opposed dropping the charges against these leaders in the Supreme Court after which the apex court directed the special CBI court in Lucknow to hold daily hearings on the 25-year-old matter and wrap it up within two years.

Pentagon confirms US air strike in Mosul killed at least 105 civilians

A Pentagon investigation has found that more than 100 civilians were killed after the US dropped a bomb on a building in Mosul, Iraq, in March.

The probe found that the US bomb triggered secondary explosions from devices clandestinely planted there by Isis fighters. And the military says the secondary blasts caused the concrete building to collapse.

It was likely the largest single incident of civilian deaths since the U.S. air campaign against Isis began in 2014.

The lead investigator is Air Force Brig. Gen. Matthew Isler. Brig. Gen. Isler says 101 civilians in the building were killed, and another four died in a nearby building. He says 36 civilians remain unaccounted for.

The deaths represent about a quarter of all civilian deaths since the U.S. air campaign began.

Critics have claimed the attack shows the US has been too aggressive in bombing congested areas like Mosul. The major Iraqi city – and last Isis city stronghold – has a population of more than 660,000.

The incident generated an international backlash strong enough to halt the Iraqi government forces’ six-month advance into Mosul.

“It’s a time for weighing new offensive plans and tactics. No combat operations are to go on,” a Federal Police spokesman said at the time

.

But the newly released Pentagon report casts blame for the casualties on Isis, saying the fighters placed secondary explosives in the building. According to the report, the 500-pound GBU-38 bomb dropped by US forces was intended to destroy only the top floor of the building.

Analysis of the building debris reportedly found materials common to Isis-made bombs, but not found in the GBU-38.

A spokesperson for the US-led Operation Inherent Resolve defended the US’s tactics in March.

“Our goal has always been for zero civilian casualties, but the coalition will not abandon our commitment to our Iraqi partners because of Isis’ inhuman tactics terrorising civilians, using human shields, and fighting from protected sites such as schools, hospitals, religious sites and civilian neighbourhoods,” he said.

Brig. Gen. Isler says American-led forces dropped the bomb under request from Iraqi Counter-terrorism Services, who were fighting their way into Mosul.

The counter-terrorism forces were reportedly facing gunfire from two Isis snipers. The US has increasingly turned to air strikes to access snipers in the densely populated area.

Families in the western district of al-Jadida sheltered in their homes as the air strike started on 17 March. Afterward, journalists reported children and at least one pregnant woman among the dead.

Russia: Syria safe zones to be shut for U.S., coalition planes – agencies

(Reuters) The safe zones which are being created in Syria will be closed for warplanes of the United States and those of the U.S.-led coalition, Russian news agencies quoted Russian envoy at Syria peace talks Alexander Lavrentyev as saying on Friday.

Turkey and Iran agreed on Thursday to Russia’s proposal for “de-escalation zones” in Syria, a move welcomed by the United Nations but met with skepticism from the United States.

Russia, Turkey and Iran signed on Thursday a memorandum on creating safe zones in Syria, while the delegation of the armed Syrian opposition walked out and shouted angrily after a new round of peace talks held in the Kazakh capital Astana.

Russia, Turkey and Iran act as guarantors of the Astana peace process.

“The Syrian Arab Republic supports the Russian initiative on de-escalation zones and confirms its commitment to the cessation of hostilities regime signed Dec. 30, 2016, which includes not bombing these regions,” said state news agency SANA, reporting a foreign ministry statement.

The report also said the Syrian army would continue to fight against what it termed terrorist groups across Syria.

SSMD participates in Asian Designer Week

New Delhi 5th May:
SSMD School of Fashion and Design in collaboration with MODART International Paris and VIDM New Delhi participated at the Asian Designer Week today and displayed a Kashmiri traditional collection. The participating designers had come together from all over the world and appreciated the outstanding designs by the Kashmiri students of SSMD who showcased their designs on such a huge platform for the first time.

Speaking on the occasion, Director, SSMD School of Fashion and Design, Ms. Insha Qazi mentioned that due to turmoil in Kashmir the students have lesser opportunities and hence SSMD aims to provide a creative release to the pent-up energy for the students in such events. She said that encouraging participants in such events act as a catalyst, in order to empower youth so that they generate self employment opportunities. She also spoke at length about the Institute’s commitment to provide the best facilities for their students at extremely reasonable prices, and with special considerations for those who find it beyond their means to show case their talent, because creativity does not come with a price tag attached.

Speaking about the collection on display, she said that the collection was named “Hamin Asto” which literally translates to ‘This is it’, taken from the Persian saying “Agar Firdaus, Bar Ruhe Zamin Ast, Hamin Asto, Hamin Asto, Hamin Ast” (If there is a heaven on earth, it’s here, it’s here, it’s here) that was popularised by Emperor Jahangir, when he first visited Kashmir and was charmed by its beauty. The garments were inspired by the rich and lush Mughal gardens of Kashmir and were a tribute to the absolute beauty of the Valley. She said that their garments stood out because the embroidery done on the products was exclusively handcrafted with precious gold and silver threads called Tilla and Däbka, done by the skilled craftsmen of Kashmir and designed meticulously by the students of SSMD. The fabrics ranged from chanderi, fine mulmul, matka silk, voile, and rich regal velvet. Techniques like hand block printing had been used with vegetable dyes and gold leaf embossing with a generous use of quilting and tilla hand embroidery in resham. The collection had heavy use of thread and metallic gold.

‘Challenge Accepted, Will Capture Delhi,’ Mamata Banerjee To Amit Shah

Edited by Raija Susan Panicke

KOLKATA: Challenge accepted, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said today, vowing to “capture Delhi.” She was responding to BJP chief Amit Shah’s targeted attack on her and her Trinamool Congress during a two-day visit to the state aimed at rapidly expanding his party’s footprint in West Bengal, where it has so far had limited political presence. Mr Shah has handed his Bengal BJP team the task of uprooting the ruling Trinamool Congress by 2019.

“I accept the challenge of those who challenge me. We’ll capture Delhi,” Mamata Banerjee declared, accusing the BJP of trying to “intimidate” the Trinamool Congress. “They come from Delhi and spread lies. They are in a hurry (to capture power in Bengal)….They cannot handle Gujarat, but they are eyeing Bengal,” the Chief Minister added.

She criticised the BJP chief ‘s booth-level interactions and visits to modest village and slum homes, saying, “They go to slums in the morning and eat dinner at five star hotels at night. Such is their double standards…I go to the slums everyday. It is not right to call the poor, poor. I respect all the poor and struggling people.”

Amit Shah picked West Bengal to begin a 15-day journey across five states where the BJP has traditionally been weak. The immediate aim is to strengthen the party cadre in each and win many more parliament seats from there by 2019, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi will seek a second term.

The BJP chief challenged Ms Banerjee directly on her turf. After visiting Naxalbari in north Bengal, where he ate lunch sitting cross-legged in the tin-roofed hut of farm worker Geeta Mahali, Mr Shah went to Mamata Banerjee’s assembly constituency Bhawanipore in south Kolkata and visited three homes in a slum. He was greeted warmly by residents who showered him with flower petals and offered him sweets.

Amit Shah began his 15-day visit across 5 states, where BJP has traditionally been weak, from Bengal.
Mr Shah discussed their problems and promised the people of Bhawanipore that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “chariot of victory” will roll into Bengal in 2019″ bringing with it the development that, he said, they have been denied.
For today’s counter-attack, Ms Banerjee chose Birpara, which is part of the Madarihat assembly constituency, one of four seats that the BJP won in the West Bengal elections last year. “I have come to Birpara before. Birpara voted for BJP, not the Trinamool, but I have come here again to show that the BJP lied before the election. They said they would open seven tea gardens in the region. That has not happened,” the Chief Minister said.

Mr Shah has alleged that Bengal under Ms Banerjee “symbolises unemployment, violence and appeasement politics.” As he wound up his Bengal visit, Mr Shah told party workers today reach out to the people, who he said have become “disillusioned” with the state’s ruling Trinamool Congress, while the opposition Congress and CPI-M have “significantly lost” their political relevance. The BJP must take advantage of that and bring more people into the party’s fold, a Bengal BJP leader quoted Mr Shah as saying.

The BJP’s message, Mr Shah instructed, must be that “development in Bengal is impossible without the BJP.”
