Caged, Gagged Kashmir

News Kashmir Exclusive

Kashmir is current bruised, caged, gagged and suffocated as the continuous unrest has killed scores and blinded , wounded many. As a matter of fact, Rape victims, pellet victims, unmarked graves, fake encounters, tortures, killed protesters, gagging internet, snapping communication, peace of graveyards ,useless inquiries have defined handling of Kashmir conflict.

All the voices of sanity are expressing deep angst over the gloomy state of affairs.

Advocate Babar Jan Qadri , President Lawyers Club states – “ Indian integrity in Kashmir is exposed to the hilt as Indian state had to show its control over Kashmir through media gag , brutal use of force and even killing Kashmiris . Indian democracy and civility is now under question at international level . Gandhi’s Indian principles will have no takers and Indian state can’t use Gandhi as currency to buy UN permanent seat. Indian Prime Minister Modi who is already exposed in Gujarat will have lot  to answer about Kashmir killings too . By Media Gag Indian state has shown it’s feeble character as no democratic system strangulates it’s so called 4th limb. In totality we can define Indian state as a political opportunist who wants to earn political space by inviting world economic powers to her home .”

Many a voices on ground feel that Indian state has failed to meet the aspirations of Kashmiris and no sense and logic has been applied to solve Kashmir issue.

While talking to News Kashmir , Senior Advocate and Spokesperson Lawyers Club , Iftikhar Ahmad states -” Kashmir is being brutally caged and suppressed .Indian or pro-indian politicians have started the old game of deception technology, time buying technology and sabotage of popular mass movement.

They are again talking of healing touch , autonomy , azaadi means different to different people in kashmir , sky is the moon , art. 370 should not be fiddled, jobs to youth ,economic development , tourism all party delegation should go to kashmir and put balm on the wounds of people , no harm in talking to hurriat , militants , mis-guided youth. , elections were rigged , they are our own people , Indian did not own kashmiri people , we coudnt keep our promise , alienation,  children education etc

GOI and collaborators are talking these niceties while killing people , blinding youth , disabling people , arresting youth ,By keeping people of Kashmir under the siege.
By talking autonomy and then dispatching autonomy report to dustbin.
By appointing interlocutors and then sending their reports to shit-bin
By changing the demography of the State.
By holding  jammu and Kashmir by adding more and more troops to  eight lakh troops ,already most militarized territory in the world.

By blaming each move on Pakistan while gagging mobile service, telephony , internet , cable and even print media.
By explaining which weapon is more lethal to crush the people of Kashmir .

By promising the Moon and settling for bullets , and pellet terrorism.”

On ground definitely the caging and gagging of Kashmir has failed to curb the sentiments of masses .

Democratize Kashmir

Pain in Kashmir has crossed all limits owing to violence occurred on account of lingering political conflict. Kashmir continues to burn in flames. For more than seven decades Kashmir, or Paradise on Earth as it is called, has suffered at length due to the extremely brutal  violence used  to quell the sentiment of masses for seeking a just solution to their centuries old conflict.

India  has time and again stated that it is the World’ biggest Democracy. But this assertion goes on much beyond mere size to a direct claim to be also the most moral democracy. How correct is this claim Of course, this unbelievable claim rests entirely upon the gross lack of knowledge and false pride of the Indian masses, who have been indoctrinated to make only an adoration of democracy and not seek its practical application on ground zero. Certainly, Kashmir nullifies this towering claim from every angle .Now, even sane Indian voices state that Kashmir is a “big blot on India’s democracy”.

Since 1988 over one lace civilians including women and children have died and many are opining that steps should be taken to address this bloodshed.

Democracy implies respecting the human rights of masses and allowing them to democratically vote to seek solution to their conflict, which in case of Kashmir is the democratically implied solution. Kashmir needs true democracy to mitigate its sufferings and pain

Media fraternity protest Media gag

n Friday midnight, after the death toll of civilians killed by forces touched 40, police raided the corporate office of Greater Kashmir—in first raid of its kind—and seized not only printed copies of Kashmir Uzma, but arrested three employees at the Printing Press as well.
More than 50,000 copies of Kashmir Uzma were seized by the cops who also misbehaved with the staff after threatening them with dire consequences.
According to reports, other newspaper printing presses were also raided, leading to forced suspension of newspapers’ publication.
On Saturday, owners and editors of several Kashmir-based newspapers held a sit-in at Press Enclave here, condemning in strong words what they called the imposition of “Press Emergency.”
Holding placards, the participant editors, reporters said: “An emergency meeting of Kashmir-based newspaper editors/owners was held on Saturday afternoon in which the situation arising out of the police raids on all the printing presses was discussed threadbare”
They strongly condemned the action of the government which has resulted in breakdown of circulation of newspapers.
The participants termed it as an attack on freedom of press and vowed to “fight it back at all costs”.
A joint statement from editors/owners later said: “A government spokesperson when contacted during the meeting conveyed that ‘in view of apprehensions of serious trouble in Kashmir Valley in next three days aimed at subverting peace, strict curfew will be imposed and movement of newspaper staff and distribution of newspapers will not be possible’.”
Taking the government’s statement into consideration, the meeting felt that it is not possible to publish the newspapers in such a situation, the statement read.
The editors apologized to the readers for the breakdown of newspaper publications which is beyond their control.
The meeting strongly condemned the formal ban, saying “it is not only reprehensible but also against the norms of a democratic set up.”
The editors assured the readers that as soon as the government lifts the “press emergency”, “we will resume our publications”.

Brutal Pellet Gun

Pellet Gun has symbolized new face of oppression in Kashmir over the past few years. Loss of Vision, terrible injuries and often fatalities have been aftermath of deadly pellets fired from  pellet guns on humans of Kashmir. As a matter of fact, a pellet is a non-spherical projectile designed to be fired from an air gun. Air gun pellets differ from bullets and shot used in firearmsbecause of the pressures encountered: airguns operate at pressures as low as 50 atmospheres, while firearms operate at thousands of atmospheres.

Even during the current wave of unrest, the indiscriminate use of pellet gun is giving nightmare to people of Kashmir with analysis emerging that-“Pellet Guns Are Giving Kashmir’s Young & Restless A Dark Future”.

On the otherhand,Indian state proudly states  that it is the biggest democracy of  the world . But in Kashmir the behavior of state seems brutally unexplainable and this has turned Kashmir into a painful Concentration camp. We all know that Eyesight is the most precious gift bestowed to mankind from God but for people who have no sight or limited sight because of a birth defect, disease, or an accident, all of life’s experiences are dimmed and virtually meaningless. But in Kashmir the new method of torture invented has been shattering and destroying  eyesight via pellet guns thus ruining their entire world.

It is high time that voices of conscience in India wake up from the slumber and force their government to stop the use of brutal pellet gun in Kashmir.

Humanity Murdered

News Kashmir Analysis

The age in which we live can only be characterized as one of barbarism. Our civilization is in the process not only of being militarized, but also being brutalized———Alva Myrdal

The above quote sums up the current heart wrenching situation of Kashmir .

The fires of political unrest have engulfed Kashmir once again, with 40 death and thousands injured  and the situation in Kashmir looks to be heading from bad to worse with every passing day. Killing of unarmed protesters, impairing vision via indiscriminate use of pellet guns, ruthless beating of protesters suggest that humanity is being murdered in Kashmir. About a 100 people have also been reported to have lost their vision completely.

All this started with the killing of popular militant commander Burhan Wani. As a matter of fact, Burhan Wani’s funeral was attended by lacs of people, and despite tough restrictions, the funeral venue was so crowded there was virtually no space to conduct funeral prayers.

Wani, 22, is largely accredited with reviving and legitimising the image of militancy in  Kashmir via the social networking skills he had.

Humanity looks to have taken the worst hit in Kashmir during the previous and current upheaveals.

Mushtaq ul Haq Sikander, a political analyst stated – “The brutal face of Indian state has once again been unveiled before the whole world, as they have once again started killing innocent protestors. Humanity, non violence, Gandhism, and Democratic values that India boasts about have all been proving an ugly hoax in Kashmir since 1947. The brutal Hindutva and dictatorial stance of India has been completely exposed in the present mass protests in Kashmir. The humanity, has died in India but is alive and thriving in Kashmir as we are serving the amarnath pilgrims, attending to the injured and upholding our Rishi tradition. Our humanity is alive, but it seems to be dead in the land of Ram and Gandhi.”

Even the voices among mainstream polity are aghast .MLA Langate Er Rasheed , while talking to News Kashmir Magazine on the situation stated that  “While from US State Department to UN Secretary General everybody is showing its concern and seeks peaceful resolution to the Kashmir dispute, New Delhi is busy in finding excuses to justify its terror on streets of Kashmir. It is unfortunate that not only PM Narendar Modi but all political parties including Congress, are running away from the problem and are not only trying to present J&K issue as a law and order problem but are busy in scoring political points over each other. However they know better, whether it is armed struggle of 1989, Amarnath land row of 2008, situation after the rape and murder of Asia and Neelofar in 2009, unrest of 2010 or now the killing of Burhan Wani and other incidents from time to time,  all these incidents do just act like triggers to give an outburst to the anti-India and pro-Aazadi sentiments among masses. Rather blaming Pakistan, GOI should understand that world community doesn’t need India’s or Pakistan’s permission to speak for the sufferings of Kashmiri people and sooner or later world community will have to force and facilitate a peaceful settlement. ”

In nutshell, Humanity in kashmir has been brutalized to large extent by the nature of atrocities committed against masses.

Our foremost objective is to sustain international personality of the Kashmir issue: Sardar Khalid Ibrahim Khan

Sardar Khalid Ibrahim Khan (born November 5, 1948) is a Kashmiri politician in Pakistan.

He is President of Pakistan Administered Kashmir’s political party Jammu Kashmir Peoples Party. He is the son of Pakistan Administered Kashmir’s ‘founder’, Sardar Muhammad Ibrahim Khan. Sardar Khalid Ibrahim was born in Rawalakot, but his roots go back to the Kashmiri Sudhans(or Sudhanzai) tribe, who claim mixed descent from the Afghan Sadozais and local indigenous tribes of the area. The Sudhanzai is the single largest tribe(1.2 million) of the Pakistan Administered  Kashmir. He resigned from the Legislative Assembly of Azad Kashmir on two occasions.

In  an exclusive interview with The News Kashmir Sardar Khalid Ibrahim Khan, talks to Editor-in-Chief Farzana Mumtaz

  1. How do you analyze the upcoming Pakistan administered Kashmir polls?

In India-Pakistan context upcoming polls are of great importance. The ruling party in Pakistan is also contesting these elections, what mandate Pakistan Muslim League (N) secures is important. Future dialogue process between India –Pakistan depends on elections results in Azad Kashmir.

  1. India says these elections have no credibility. Your take?

India-Pakistan both trade allegations whenever elections are held in either part of Jammu and Kashmir but because of their continuity, Azad Kashmir elections have a better international credibility.

  1. What are prospects of your party in these elections?

Jammu Kashmir Peoples Party is contesting elections in alliance with Pakistan Muslim league (N) therefore chances of forming a coalition Government are bright.

  1. Do you agree politicians in your part are less qualified?

Of all the princely states of the sub-continent, Jammu and Kashmir is the only state which assumed international Personality, which was result of decisions made by Azad Kashmir’s Leadership. With the passage of time people have changed their priorities and prefer to choose more accessible politicians rather than qualified.

  1. Pakistan has neglected Pakistan Administered Kashmir in terms of Development. Your take?

Azad Kashmir has come a long way as for as development is concerned especially in education and communication sector. Rate of literacy was gone up from 4 % in1947 to 68% in 2016, road network (metalled) was 125 km which now is 4000 km, with more planning; funds provided by Pakistan government could have been better utilized.

Our foremost objective is to sustain international personality of the Kashmir issue and seeking solution of the problem in light of UNCIP resolutions.  Secondly, achieving self-reliance economically is also one of our top priorities.

  1. Is Pakistan failing to win war against extremism?

Pakistan a front line state against terrorism has rendered immense sacrifices and has established writ in areas where extremism had made in roads earlier.

Fight against extremism is a long draw process; politically speaking there is very little space for extremism in Pakistan society. We are sure that time is not far away where moderate forces would thrive.

  1. Your view on Gilgit demand of separate state?

Gilgit-Baltistan is part and parcel of Jammu And Kashmir State and would decide its future with union of state in accordance with UNCIP resolutions.

  1. Your message?

People should rise above their personal considerations and vote for the right people for the right job.

Pakistan Diary

By Farzana Mumtaz

I was recently in Pakistan invited for a conference on Kashmir and peace in region. The conference was held in capital city Islamabad. The visit to that part of the world gave me a feeling how things are much different  in a place when watched from own perspective rather than from secondary sources . As soon as I entered Lahore the city presented its glittering and historic looks. The people were also nice with culture not much different from the Indian side of Punjab. Lahore as a historic city is home to many attractions. Pertinently,  Lahore has successfully maintained its historical touch. Prominent attraction of Lahore city  is the historical Minar-e-Pakistan (literally “Tower of Pakistan”) a public monument located in Iqbal Park which is one of the largest urban parks in Lahore, Punjab, Pakistan. The tower was constructed during the 1960s on the site where, on 23 March 1940, the All-India Muslim League passed the Lahore Resolution, the first official call for a separate homeland for the Muslims living in South Asia, in accordance with the two-nation theory.

Another must see location is the  Badshahi Mosque  or “Emperor’s Mosque” . This historical mosque was built in 1673 by the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb in Lahore, Pakistan. It is one of the city’s best known landmarks and a major tourist attraction representing  the beauty and grandeur of the Mughal era

Pertinently, the construction going on metro train suggests that Lahore is trying to make a perfect match of history with modernity. Many beautiful gardens and canals add to charm of Lahore combined with the beautiful markets.

The lush green city of Islamabad is treat to watch in terms of cleanness and attractive forest cover which proves why it is among the best capital cities of the world. Daman-e-Koh, at an altitude of 3000 ft, is a viewing point and hill top modern garden in Islamabad and a very picturesque spot. The entire area provides panoramic view of Islamabad.

Another major attraction is the Faisal Mosque (also known as Shah Faisal Masjid) which  is an exceptionally large and unique mosque in Islamabad. Centaurus Mall is one of Islamabad’s hottest attractions. The Centaurus is a mixed use real-estate development in Islamabad, Pakistan. The project includes a mammoth mall, 36-floor hotel, three 23-floor residential and office towers

People by and large are friendly. The average and literate Pakistanis want freedom from extremism and do not buy much into extremism as they feel it has hurt their country a lot. Shia and  Sunni divide is not to be seen as  many families  consist  of shia , sunni members  without any animosity and living in harmonious relationship.

The constituency of peace is also quite handsome in Pakistan and  wants peaceful resolution of issues. One meets many youth who want to carve a positive image of Pakistan .The pulse on ground is that coming years are going to be crucial for Pakistan as it tries to secure a victory in battle against terrorism.

Overall, the journey to Pakistan was an enthralling experience.

RIP Amjad Sabri

World renowned and Popular qawwal Amjad Sabri was shot dead by unidentified gunmen in Karachi’s Liaquatabad area on Wednesday, people belonging to all walks of life condemned the incident and mourned his death. The nation of Pakistan and his fans throughout the world are in shock over his killing by terrorists.

Pakistan Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif has strongly condemned terrorist attack in which famous Qawwal Amjad Sabri lost his life. The Prime Minister prayed for eternal peace for the departed soul and strength to the bereaved family to bear this irreparabe loss. The Prime Minister directed the concerned to find the culprits behind this attack and bring them to task. Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif paid tributes to the services of Mr. Amjad Sabri for promotion of Qawwali in the country and said he will be immensely missed in times ahead.Others too expressed their grief .

It is worth mentioning here that Amjad Sabri was the nephew of qawwali icon Maqbool Sabri who passed away in 2011.

Maqbool Sabri along with his brother, the late Ghulam Farid Sabri, formed a formidable qawwali group in the mid-50s and became known for their soul-stirring renditions of arifana kalam (mystic poetry).

One hopes Pakistan will wake up from slumber to fight extremism.

Thirsty Ramadan

News Kashmir Bureau

Clean, safe drinking water is becoming scarce in the once water rich valley of Kashmir. The water woes are getting more aggravated in this holy month of Ramadan. People throughout the length and breadth of the Kashmir valley are complaining about the scarcity of potable water and many areas are witnessing protests as a result.

Pertinently, Downtown areas of Srinagar city are specially hit by this water scarcity and even once water sufficient areas are getting low volumes of water. The other areas like Batmaloo,Iddgah, Rawalpora have also  been facing dire problems with reference to drinking water.  In many areas of Kashmir the water supply schemes are taking much time to mature.

Even the rural areas like Pattan, Tral, Tangmarg etc are hit by this acute water scarcity.

In worrying statistics, more than 40 per cent of the rural areas in Jammu and Kashmir do not have access to proper drinking water facilities but the state government has guaranteed that all such habitations will be covered by 2020.

Pertinently,  state has 15,798 rural habitations, out of which 8,535 habitations (54 per cent) are fully covered and are being provided drinking water at 40-55 litres per consumer daily, Minister of State for PHE, Irrigation and Flood Control, Farooq Ahmad Andrabi said at the Legislative Council recently .

As a matter of fact, the water crisis has reached the Assembly as recently  PDP MLA from Sonawar, Muhammad Ahsraf Mir, said that people in his constituency are “crying” for drinking water.

“People in my constituency are facing immense problems because of water scarcity. They have been continuously complaining about it, but the government is not addressing the issue,” Mir said.

Mir said that the officials in PHE are giving wrong information to the government and especially to the minister concerned about availability of water and water supply schemes.

“Strict action should be taken against these officers for misleading the minister and the government,” he said, adding, “The information provided about water supply schemes and pipeline is totally baseless. The officers have said that Rs. 10 lakh have been spent for pipes, but only less than Rs. 1 lakh has been spent so far,” he said. While replying to the legislator, Minister for Rural Development Abdul Haq Khan assured that action will be taken against the “erring” officials.

Representatives from several other constituencies have raised the issue of scarce water in their areas.

Abdul Ahad, a commoner while talking to News Kashmir states- “ We the people from Downtown are facing thirsty Ramadan on account of lack of water supply which is giving rise to multiple problems as we all know that water is life. The concerned authorities should wake up and ensure quality and uninterrupted water supply to us.”

Undoubtedly, people throughout the valley are facing acute shortage of water which is making life more difficult especially in the fasting month of Ramadan.

Violence revisits Kashmir

News Kashmir Analysis

Violence has started to revisit the already turbulent valley of Kashmir. Series of acts of violence have followed one another indicating that the summer 2016 is going to be full of unrest in Kashmir valley. A glance at recent violent acts hint that graph of violence is running at a very high pace in Kashmir .

In the month of May several cops and militants were killed in attacks and encounters. June has witnessed much more deadly violence. A Jammu and Kashmir Police sub-inspector and a constable were killed on Saturday the 4th June when militants  attacked a police party in Anantnag district in a sensational attack .

Soon after this violent episode, the South Kashmir Bijbehra township was rocked by deadly attack   when  Border Security Force (BSF) jawans were killed in a militant  attack in Bijbehara .

As the details followed three jawans of Border Security Force (BSF) were killed and seven others were injured when their convoy was attacked by militants in Jammu and Kashmir’sBijbehara .Three civilians were also injured in the attack considered to be as a guerrilla attack on the security forces.

In a latest episode on 15th June , there were two grenade attacks by militants within a span of 10 minutes in Shopian district of Kashmir this evening, resulting in injuries to two civilians.

The first attack took place at 5.30 pm when militants threw a grenade at the police station building complex in Shopian town, a police official said.

The grenade exploded in the compound of the police station without causing any damage, he said.

In the second attack, the militants threw a grenade at Batapora chowk, about 200 metres away from the police station, resulting in injuries to two civilians.

The injured persons have been admitted to District Hospital for treatment, the official.

The chain of violent events has been witnessed in every region of Kashmir since past few months. Recently,  a  soldier was killed and at least four militants killed in an encounter in border area of North Kashmir  .

Lamenting these killings, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti has some time back stated that such violent incidents hamper peace efforts between India and its neighbour.

“If we create a conducive atmosphere, only then will the two countries be able to talk. If incidents like this and Pathankot happen then Pakistan should also think about it. They (Pakistan) are fighting this menace in their country. They say they have affection for the people of Kashmir, but what sort of affection is this,” she asked.

Ajaz Ahmad, a political watcher states –“the periods of violence have hit the valley of Kashmir from time to time and it is this atmosphere of uncertainty that has kept the Kashmir under boil. We should understand that unsolved political issue of Kashmir is keeping the situation continuously volatile and turbulent. Confidence building measures with reference to solving political issue of Kashmir are need of the hour.”

Gauging the scale of violence of past few months in Kashmir the challenges for recently formed government of PDP BJP seem to be getting more tough and pronounced.
