Hopeless Youth: Waiting for Allah

News Kashmir Exclusive

Youth is the season of hope and optimism  but   in Kashmir over the past three decades of never ending bloodshed , violence and unresolved issues Youth have bore the worst brunt of  all the bleak situations. Killings, protests, agitations , curfews, blinding, uncertainties, strikes have made youth of Kashmir to be always feel at  receiving end.

Everyday young educated minds getting killed in gunbattles and encounters is causing much worry to voices of sanity in Kashmir.

Democracy is the pulse  for our political system and Youth are its integral dimension . The  gross human rights violations faced by the youth of Kashmir coupled with absence of concrete political space in Kashmir is stated by many experts to be among the prominent reasons of youth being pushed to wall as youth neither find any respectable jobs nor any good  space in mainstream nor separatist polity.

Youth of Kashmir continue to remain disgruntled and get thus easily motivated by the violent path and have worryingly enough developed love towards death and hate towards life.

Young people are not given opportunities to prove themselves claiming that they are not equipped with experience to participate actively in the governance of the state.

Dynasty politics and its upper hand in mainstream polity of the state is a matter of great concern and a contributing factor in pushing youth to wall, according to ground zero voices.

Lateef ahmed , a youthful voice states “ We are aware about the importance of the young people in nation building  but we are losing our youth to never ending bloodshed and mayhem. Lack of political space is making matters worse for our youth. No doubt political parties in the mainstream and separatist polity need to show more generous approach while inducting youth into the polity and party fold but on the other hand youth too need to come forward and be patient while choosing politics as it demands lot of strength of mind. We also as society elders need to teach the youth of the Kashmir value of life .”

On the otherhand of the spectrum, steadily ban on student politics should be lifted in the state.

Many great minds are product of the student politics and have learnt lot through t and experts are of  firm belief that time has come to lift ban on the student politics in our part of the world. With time we should lift ban at student politics in top universities and regulate it in an effective way so that youth anger gets less. Jobs too need to be provided to youth at good pace to kill their alienation and also given more freedom from fear.

Inspirations from Karbala Battle

The word Karbala is not just a name of place or any simple concept  but a concept that fills our heart, mind with million emotions and eyes with billion tears , The martyrdom of Imam Hussain (as) in the Karbala has inspired entire humanity and world renowned  thinkers and leaders have taken this tragedy as an inspiration in their respective struggles of justice. The tragedy of Karbala took place some 49 years after the death of Prophet Mohammad [PBUH] in 61 Hijri (AD 680). Karbala and unprecedented heroic battle of Imam Hussain as finds no parallel in history and has inspired one and all. James Corne (Author of History of China) wrote –

“Hussain and his companions faced eight kinds of enemies. On the four sides the army of Yezid was their enemy which was ceaselessly raining arrows; the fifth foe was the sun of Arabia that was scorching the bodies; the sixth foe was the desert of Karbala the sands of which were scorching like a heated furnace; the seventh and eighth foes were the overpowering hunger and the unbearable thirst. Thus on those who fought with thousands of infidels in such conditions has ended bravado; on such a people no gallant (hero) can ever have pre-eminence.

African noted peace icon and leader Nelson Mandela wrote –“ I(Nelson Mandela) has spent more than 20 years in prison, then on one night I decided to surrender by signing all the terms and conditions of government. BUT suddenly I thought about Imam Hussain and Karbala movement and Imam Hussain give me strength to stand for right of freedom and liberation and I did.”

Battle of Karbala has inspired one and all.

Ashura teaches us essence of Salat!

By Javeed Ali

Today is the Ashura of Muharram-ul-Haram 1440 AH. Each one of us is commemorating the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussain (A.S) and his companions which they gave for the revival of the Islamic principles in the battlefield of Karbala in Iraq. The event which happened in the year 61 of the lunar calendar gave impetus to Islam and laid the foundation of effective movement against the falsehood, immorality, arrogance, injustice, tyranny and oppression happening across time and space.
To all the tribulations and brutalities which were inflicted on Imam Hussain (A.S) and his loyalists, they faced them bravely and courageously and set exemplary lessons for all of us. Every Islamic and moral task was beautifully illustrated in Karbala by the martyrs due their steadfastness and commitment to their cause. These lessons of Karbala have created a treasure of sublime ethics and values for the whole humanity. There are many lessons which we can imbibe from Karbala, one such lesson is the importance of Salat (Namaz).
There is no doubt that Yazid and his soldiers crossed all limits in unleashing oppression and tyranny on Imam Hussain (A.S.) and his companions and brutally massacred them but couldn’t succeed in breaking their resolve and faith. Karbala martyrs stood firm to their noble cause and never deviated from their righteous path.
A day before Ashura (10th Muharram), Imam Hussain (A.S) pleaded for one night so that he and his companions could spend the last night in the worship and supplication. They spent the whole night in prayers, reciting Holy Quran and remembrance of Allah Almighty. Even the enemies acknowledged that the voices from the tent of Imam Hussain (A.S) on the night of Ashura were like the murmur of bees in the beehive.
Soon after morning prayers were offered, the enemy attacked and the battle started. All the atrocities and barbarism were thrown upon on Karbala martyrs. Despite all the cruelty and savagery of the enemies of Islam, Imam Hussain (A.S) set up for the Zuhar prayers with his nears and dears soaked in blood. Two of his companions shielded Imam Hussain (A.S) from the arrows and spears while he offered Salat. This is the clear indication that Salat is so important that two loyal followers of Imam Hussain (A.S) attained martyrdom while defending it.
There is a famous saying that friend of friend is a friend so if we claim that we love Imam Hussain (A.S) then we should love and follow everything whatever he loved and followed. Imam Hussain (A.S) loved Salat and the remembrance of Allah Almighty. If we assert that we love Imam Hussain (A.S) then how can we remain careless about performing our Salat. The honorable Imam even prostrated for the Asr prayers on Ashura with his body riddled with arrows, daggers and spears so how can we neglect Salat on the pretext of petty issues. A true follower and lover of Imam Hussain (A.S) whether he is Shia or Sunni will never abandon Salat whatever athe circumstances. As is being said anything beloved to a lover is to be venerated and idolized. Salat was very close to the heart of Imam Hussain (A.S) so it should also be close to our heart.
Commemorating the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussain (A.S) should renew our faith and belief. Participating in Muharram processions and congregations should rekindle our soul and it should make us more pious and devout. As Salat is of higher rank among the various acts of worship, therefore it should not be missed. Salat is a pillar of Islam and its being considered as the ascent (Meraj) of a believer.
Whatever deeds we perform for Islam and humanity will only be accepted in the court of Allah Almighty if our Salat gets acceptance. So, our remembrance and mourning for the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (A.S) and his companions in the battlefields of Karbala will only be rewarded if we offer our daily Salat punctually and religiously. Karbala occurred for the revival of Islam , so it should revive our faith and belief; if not then we have not yet understood the true significance of Karbala.
Allah Almighty says in Surah Taha, Surah No. 20, Verse No. 132:
“And enjoin prayer upon your family and adhere thou steadily unto it”
This verse clearly reveals that we should be punctual in our Salat and also we should persuade others for it.(Al Quran)
Let’s make a firm resolution this Muharam-ul-Haram that we will not skip any of our obligatory prayers and we will influence others to do the same. Inshallah!

Trifurcation Plans! Divide and Rule ?

News Kashmir Exclusive

Over the past few weeks few media reports are doing round that  the government of India is seriously thinking  to divide the state of Jammu and Kashmir into three parts i.e Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh. This demand has been more vocal in Ladakh region and also among some quarters in Jammu region with Kashmir opposing it.

According to these very media reports, PM Modi wants to solve the issue of Kashmir before 2019 general elections and it is also possible that PM Modi may himself in a month or so announce trifurcation of Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh.

As a matter of fact, he demand for separate state has been very high in Ladakh region. All Religious Joint Action Committee (ARJAC) leaders passed a resolution demanding union territory status for Ladakh. In a memorandum to Prime Minister, ARJAC leaders had said, “Ladakh is fundamentally different from Kashmir in all respects — culturally, ethnically and linguistically. Over the years the successive governments of the state have adopted a policy of discrimination and subversion towards the region with the sole objective of stifling its people and marginalizing its historical, religious and cultural identity.” The ARJAC leaders further said, “In modern times, when the whole subcontinent has passed through the process of decolonisation to enjoy the fruits of national Independence, we, the people of Ladakh, and our land still continue to suffer under the old concept of colonial administrative structure, which suited the imperial interests and feudal rulers under the name of the pseudo-state of Jammu & Kashmir.”

The ARJAC memo further stated, “Our humble submission is that we are neither the problem nor part of any problem involving the state. Rather we are the solution. We firmly believe that all of us live only if India lives. Our commitment to patriotism is firm and unequivocal. Our people and soldiers have never hesitated to make supreme sacrifices in the discharge of their duties towards the country. We shall never fail the nation.”

Many a sane voices see the plans to divide Jammu and Kashmir state into three parts as a ploy to divide and rule.

Mir Imran, Human rights defender stated “ Trifurcation of the Jammu and Kashmir into three regions I. e Jammu, Ladakh, Kashmir is news that has been doing rounds since long, but it will not help in anyway settling the political issue of Kashmir as whole state under UN charter is disputed. Trifurcation of the state will lead to such deep communal polarization that communal riots will become order of day. Plus all the sane sections of the state will with full tooth and nail oppose the division of the state into three parts as this goes against the ethos and identity of the state. Divisions won’t carry us anywhere but will add to our problems and create other issues as well. If government of India goes ahead with its idea of dividing the state it would be disaster met with heavy resistance from people of the Jammu and Kashmir state.”

How I learnt to speak Kashmiri

Mahaq Tahir Tromboo

I was born and raised in Karnataka. My parents are from Kashmir and I have always fancied the Kashmiri language and wished my Kashmiri was as good as theirs.

At the age of five, I could speak English, Hindi, a little bit of Kannada but I could hardly understand a word or two in Kashmiri. Being the only person at home who didn’t know Kashmiri, I missed out on a lot of family conversations. That’s when I knew that I NEED to learn the language soon!

The story of how I learnt Kashmiri is quiet funny and a story that my mother has told  literally everybody she knows!

I picked up random phrases from Kashmiri daily soaps on the Doordarshan channel and used to repeat those dialogues all day long. In fact, I still remember some of those dialogues! So, I decided to keep my self learning a secret and surprise them the day I could speak perfect Kashmiri.

During my initial days of learning, I picked a catchy dialogue from the TV soap. My heart was filled with joy when I could repeat it correctly and I spent the entire afternoon practising this phrase. With great pride over my accomplishment, I walked to my mother and said- “mama, che payyi thratth!”. The reaction I got from her was completely different from what I had expected. She was shocked, confused and angry, all at the same time! She asked where I learnt this from. It was a Kashmiri curse and definitely not something she wanted her baby girl to hear, say or even know!

My mother had realised that I was adamant on learning Kashmiri so, she decided to teach me herself and monitored the words that I picked up. I seemed to pick up the language pretty fast. My grandfather also helped me by correcting the errors I made and encouraging me to talk in Kashmiri.

Fast forward to 2014, when I moved to Kashmir, I was shocked to see that most Kashmiris around my age chose not to speak in their own language. In Karnataka, Kannadigas love and promote their mother tongue, I was expecting to see the same in Srinagar but that wasn’t the case here. I was extremely disappointed to see that Kashmiris who chose to speak in their mother tongue were looked down upon. In fact many parents didn’t even teach their children Kashmiri for this reason. I failed to understand this behaviour of the Kashmiri society.

The best way to kill a community, is by killing its language. Kashmiris need to realise the importance of learning their mother tongue and preserving their language. Youngsters in Kashmir must be encouraged to speak in their mother tongue. It’s high time for us to realise that if our language dies, then so will the essence of Kashmir.

Humanity lessons from Karbala

Rameez Makhdoomi

The word Karbala is not just a name of place but a concept that fills our heart, mind with million emotions and eyes with billion tears , The martyrdom of Imam Hussain (as) in the Karbala has inspired entire humanity and world renowned  thinkers and leaders have taken this tragedy as an inspiration in their respective struggles of justice. The tragedy of Karbala took place some 49 years after the death of Prophet Mohammad [PBUH] in 61 Hijri (AD 680).

Mahatma Gandhi stated – “My admiration for the noble sacrifice of Imam Hussain (as) as a martyr abounds, because he accepted death and the torture of thirst for himself, for his sons, and for his whole family, but did not submit to unjust authorities.” “I learnt from Hussain how to achieve victory while being oppressed.”

Gandhi has added -“My faith is that the progress of Islam does not depend on the use of sword by its believers, but the result of the supreme sacrifice of Hussain.”“If India wants to be a successful country, it must follow in the footsteps of Imam Hussain(as). “If I had an army like the 72 soldiers of Hussain, I would have won freedom for India in 24 hours.”

Karbala was a battle of truth against falsehood, humanity against barbarism , righteousness against demonic forces , justice against injustice . The much loved grandson of the Prophet [PBUH] stood in the scorching heat of Karbala along with his companions, devoid of water but determined. His loved ones, including his six month old son, fell martyr one after the other. In spite of this he repeatedly invited the other party towards righteousness and forbade them from evil and immorality, but it all fell on deaf ears.

Through the battle of Karbala Imam Hussein (as) uprooted despotism forever, till the day of Resurrection. He watered the dry gardens of freedom with a surging wave of his blood, and indeed he awakened the sleeping Muslim nation.

The battle of Karbala is perhaps the only battle in human history wherein martyrs have cast impression on every human heart irrespective of belief or race and whose martyrs are remembered by one and all. Karbala refreshes our faith and Karbala makes us stand firm against injustice for all times to come. Karbala teaches us that powerful might have his way through for sometime but it is only those who are on path of justice that are remembered always.

Save Wular Lake

Wular India’s largest fresh water lake is not just pride of Kashmir but entire India and it is located in North Kashmir’s Bandipore district in the Indian  state of Jammu and Kashmir. It is also one of the largest freshwater lakes in Asia and one of the most awesome  lake of world . As a matter of fact, The lake basin was formed as a result of tectonic activity and is fed by the Jhelum River. The lake’s size varies from 12 to 100 square miles (30 to 260 square kilometers), depending on the season.

Wular Lake is an important fish habitat, the main species being the Common carp (Cyprinus carpio), rosy barb (Barbus conchonius), mosquito fish (Gambusia affinis), Nemacheilus species, Crossocheilus latius, and various snowtrout [disambiguation needed] species in the genera Schizopyge and Schizothorax.

It is worth pointing out that Fish from Wular Lake make up a vital part  of the diet for innumerable  living on its shores and elsewhere in the Kashmir valley. It is also source of livelihood for thousands of families .

In recognition of its biological, hydrological and socio-economic values, the lake was included in 1986 as a Wetland of National Importance under the Wetlands Programme of the Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of India for intensive conservation and management purposes.

However it continuously  faces environmental threats including the conversion of large parts of the lake’s catchment areas into agriculture land, pollution from fertilizers and animal wastes, hunting of waterfowl and migratory birds and weed infestation in the lake itself.

But the lake is facing dire threats from human greed and indifferent attitude of authorties. The pollution from fertilizers and animals as well as human wastes, the conversion of vast catchment into agriculture land and the hunting pressure on waterfowl and migratory birds are the biggest problems in the region.

According to experts, the current unattended bleak situation of Wular Lake can have catastrophic impacts on the overall natural beauty paradigm of Kashmir as the lake forms an important part of diverse beauty of Kashmir. Experienced voices state that if current situation continues Wular  lake would face great damage and thus all urge upon masses and authorities to save this precious jewel of Kashmir from further havoc.

Nobody’s Polls! Why Mainstream political parties are hesitant to take part !

News Kashmir Exclusive

In dramatic developments for the mainstream polity in the trouble torn state of Jammu and Kashmir the prominent mainstream parties national conference and Peoples Democratic Party have decided to boycott the upcoming local body and panchayat polls. Two days after the profreedom camp  in Kashmir called for boycott of the municipal and panchayat elections, mainstream National Conference also decided to stay away from the polls.

The National Conference on Wednesday announced its boycott of the upcoming elections announced by the Governor’s Administration to be held around October-December this year. Pertinently, The party sought clarification from the Central Government about the protection of Article 35A in and outside the courts.

National Conference president Dr Farooq Abdullah after chairing the party’s core group meeting at its party headquarters at “Nawa-i-Subh” Complex in Srinagar, told reporters that his party won’t contest the upcoming panchayat and municipal elections as the situation was not conducive for the elections. Just before , the NC core group meeting had a detailed discussion about the prevailing situation in the State with particular reference to Article 35A of the Constitution. The meeting felt that any tinkering with Article 35A  has disastrous consequences not only for the State but for the entire country.

The core group said that the role of the Central Government and the Governor’s Administration vis-a-vis Article 35A in the Supreme Court clearly goes against the wishes and aspirations of the people of the State.

The party alleged that announcement of municipal and panchayat polls by Governor’s Administration was taken hastily without taking into consideration the prevailing situation created in view of unnecessary attempts to fiddle with Article 35 A. NC vice-president Omar Abdullah in a tweet said, “It is now for the Central government to clarify whether it stands with regard to Art 35A. It is not enough to use panchayat & municipal elections simply to delay proceedings in the court”.

On the otherhand, Jammu and Kashmir’s People’s Democratic Party has also indicated it has reservations about local bodies’ poll in the state a day after its bitter political rival National Conference said it would boycott the elections. The PDP, which ruled the state till recently with the BJP, said the centre’s decision to seek deferment of Supreme Court hearing on Article 35A till after the panchayat elections, smacks of conspiracy.

Speaking to NDTV, former chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti said that people are expecting mischief after the centre sought that the hearing on Article 35A in the Supreme Court be deferred.”It is difficult to ignore the public sentiment. There is apprehension that Article 35A may be fiddled with once these elections are over,” said Ms Mufti.

Ms Mufti, who also headed the PDP-BJP government in the state till the BJP pulled off support in June, said the decision of National Conference to boycott elections has made these polls meaningless. “National Conference is the main regional party. What is the credibility of these elections when there is no contest?” she said.

The analysis is that with this decision the mainstream polity seems to be going into a big mess .

Decriminalizing Homosexuality

Love or sexual orientation between Men and Men, Women and women have always remained a deeply controversial topic in human history. Homosexuality is not an offence in India and it is not a mental disorder, five Supreme Court judges declared today in a spectacular leap for gay rights in the country and a rainbow moment in its history. The Supreme Court overruled its own 2013 decision and partially struck down Section 377, a controversial British-era law that banned consensual gay sex. The ban is irrational, indefensible and manifestly arbitrary, the judges said. “Take me as I am,” said Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra, toasting gay pride. “We have to bid adieu to prejudices and empower all citizens,” said Chief Justice Misra, reading out what he said was a consensus judgment. The judges also said: “Homosexuality not a mental disorder, treat LGBT without stigma.”Section 377, which is part of an 1861 law, bans “carnal intercourse against the order of nature with any man, woman or animal” — which was interpreted to refer to homosexual sex..A part of that law still remains; non-consensual or consent obtained by force continues to be an offence, as will “carnal intercourse with children, animals and bestiality”.

The verdict is being cheered by millions across the country, far beyond the gay community, which has fought for decades for the right to be treated equally. The historic judgment acknowledged their struggle as it noted “158 years ago, the law deprived people of love.” The judges said: “Respect for individual choice is the essence of liberty; LGBT community possesses equal rights under the constitution.”

This verdict will have great relief for gays and lesbians living in India.
