J&K State : NC, PDP, CONGRESS Government reality offers sensation

Altaf Bukhari likely CM

In a sensational development, The PDP, Congress, and National Conference (NC) on Wednesday confirmed an alliance in Jammu and Kashmir, ahead of the 19 December deadline to the Governor’s Rule in the state. According to reports, PDP’s Altaf Bukhari is the ‘consensus’ candidate for the post of chief minister.

As the valley of Kashmir is simmering with almost daily killings  in an unprecedented wave of surge in militancy  the India- Pakistan relations are on everyday basis  hitting rock bottom thus making possibility of peace a remote possibility .All this is mostly having adverse impact on Kashmir scenario. Now with govt formation hopes are rising.

The plan of all these three major political parties in its roadmap visualizes  a coalition between PDP and Congress, which have been partners in a government between 2002 and 2007, backed from outside by the National Conference. The PDP has 28 MLAs, followed by NC with 15 and Congress with 12 which will make up for a clear majority. The alliance is being discussed with the aim of stemming BJP’s chances of forming the government in the state again.

Congress has made intentions clear to support the government . “The Congress is ready to support both the PDP and the NC if they are willing to form a government. Both the PDP and the NC have held talks on the subject of government formation. These talks are informal and hopefully these parties will conduct formal talks now,” said Ghulam Ahmad Mir, Congress State Head.

Nothing seems to have gone right in the BJP PDP Government and things have gone from bad to worse .Expert question and analysis is that  with Altaf Bukhari to be new chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir. Leaders of parties to reach Jammu and present letter of support to Governor. Will Governor act to stop the ‘grand alliance’ juggernaut?.

The day we should never forget!

By Javeed Ali

Undoubtedly, there is no day as beautiful as the day of the birth anniversary of the impeccable and ideal personality in the whole Universe. The day which illuminated the whole World.  The day which annihilated the foundations of ignorance. The day humanity regained its humanism. The day oppressed and persecuted found their saviour. The day female folk who were being buried alive found hope of survival. The day unjust and tyrant rulers were challenged. The day life got its meaning. The day all the creatures of the universe were rejoicing and merry-making.  The day Allah Almighty gifted His best creation to humanity.

Yes, undoubtedly, it’s the day whole humanity should remember and celebrate. Allah Almighty says in Surah Yunus, Surah No. 10, Verse No. 58:

“In the grace of Allah and His mercy, in that they should rejoice; it is better than (the wealth) that they gather”

In this verse, Allah Almighty says that we should be happy when we receive blessings and mercy from Him.  Eid Milad-un-Nabi (SAW) is celebrated to express our happiness and blessedness on the day of arrival of Prophet Mohammad (SAW) on this earth.

Allah Almighty says in Holy Quran:

“And remind them of the days of the Allah.” (Surah Ibrahim, Surah No. 14, Verse No. 05)
“And remember when your lord proclaimed, if you will be grateful then I shall give you more and if you are thankless then my treatment is severe.” (Surah Ibrahim, Surah No. 14 and Verse 07)
“Then remember the bounties of Allah and wander not in the earth spreading mischief.” (Surah Al- A’raf, Surah No. 07, Verse 74)
It is quite evident from the above verses of Quran that we should remember and express our gratitude for the bounties which Allah Almighty has bestowed upon us. The greatest of all blessings for whole humankind is the arrival of Rahmatal-lil’Aalameen (SAW) on this earth as revealed in following Quranic verses.

“O Mohammad, We have not sent you but as a blessing for all the worlds.” (Sura Al Ambiyaa, Surah No. 21, Verse No. 107)
Certainly did Allah confer [great] favour upon the believers when He sent among them a Messenger from themselves, reciting to them His verses and purifying them and teaching them the Book and wisdom, although they had been before in manifest error.   (Sura Ale Imran, Surah No. 03, Verse No. 164)
“Truly you are of a magnificent character” (Surah Al-Qalam, Surah No. 68, Verse No. 04)

Indubitably, the Prophet Mohammad (SAW) is the greatest mercy and blessing of Allah Almighty and Allah says in Quran:  “And publicize well the favour of your lord”  (Sura Al Duha, Surah No. 93,  Verse No. 11).

Eid Milad-un-Nabi (SAW) is a way to aware world about the greatest personality of all times and also sends out the message that Islam is the religion of peace and amity.  Moreover, salutations are sent to Prophet Mohammad (SAW) as is commanded in Holy Quran.
“Indeed Allah and His angels send blessings on the Prophet. O believers, call for Allah’s blessings on him and salute him with all respect.”   (Surah Al Ahzab, Surah No. 33, Verse No. 56)
Some people argue that the way Eid Milad-un-Nabi (SAW) is celebrated, it goes against the tenets of Islam. Yes, we agree if any act which is being performed during the celebration of birth anniversary of Prophet Mohammad (SAW) goes against the teachings of Holy Prophet and Quran then same should be strictly avoided like mixing of opposite genders, improper Hejab (veil), indiscipline, hindrance in traffic flow, unnecessary use of PA System (Public Address System), abominable activities and so on.

Allah asks the Prophet, Peace be upon him, to remind his Nation that it is essential for those who claim to love Allah, to love His Prophet: “Say to them: If you love Allah, follow (and love and honour) me, and Allah will love you” (Suran Aale-e-‘Imran, Surah No. 03, Verse No. 31).

The above verse quite emphatically says that if we claim to love Allah then we should love Prophet Mohammad (SAW) and follow Him by letter & spirit. We cannot get away from our religious and moral obligations by merely celebrating the birth anniversary of Prophet Mohammad (SAW). It should make us more pious and religious. It should make us morally perfect and it should revive our ethics and religious ethos.

Holy Quran stresses on the importance of unity and peaceful co-existence. “And hold fast by the covenant of Allah all together and be not divided” (Surah Aali’Imran, Surah No. 03, Verse No. 103).

Religious gatherings like Hajj pilgrimage, Arba’een (the fortieth day of martyrdom of Karbala martyrs) and Milad procession serves as an important platform to forge unity among the Muslim Ummah. People from different places and sects get together and it greatly helps to sort out mutual issues and confront the common enemies of Islam and humanity.

Imam Khomeini (R.A) had declared the week between 9th and 17th Rabi al-Awwal as “Haft-i-Wahdat” meaning “the week of unity amongst Muslims.” Muslims all over the world are urged to get together and celebrate (Eid-E-Milad un Nabi) the birth of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) for the whole week. Sunnis and Shias are two arms (Bazoo) of the Islam, Imam Khomeini (R.A.) has said.

Celebrating the birth anniversary of Prophet Mohammad (SAW) is one of the ways to express our love and gratitude to our beloved Prophet (PBUH) so as to attain perfection in our faith but its not enough until and unless we follow and obey Prophet Mohammad (SAW) in every sphere of our life in its true spirit . If we claim that we love Prophet Mohammad (SAW) more than our lives then we should always make sure that we never indulge in any act which should be the cause of disappointment to Allah Almighty and Prophet Mohammad (SAW) then only these religious gatherings, congregations and parades will serve their purpose.

May we live and die as the true followers of Prophet Mohammad (SAW). Ameen

Nigeria To ME

Lois Tarikabor

It’s the 1st of October and I’ll tell you straight up that my feelings are not right. I searched within me the whole day looking for the progress to celebrate in my country. I thought to myself that slow progress is still progress but then again I questioned, progressing and “de-progressing” if there’s a word like that, can that be any progress at all.

I’m done fully criticizing the “leaders” of our nation, their corruption and their greed all carefully fine-tuned underneath their manifestos.

Nigeria is the president who thinks the country his serving lacks the equipments he needs to save his health and spends much more when he spends our 3rd world currency in a 1st world country.

Nigeria is the young boy hawking on the streets with no education, Nigeria is the road side Akara seller that has to give her husband whatever stipend she makes at the end of the day. Nigeria is the yahoo boy who gives himself the excuse that he had no choice and the Lagos girl who sleeps under the bridge at night and is a happening girl during the day.

Nigeria is the razz bus-conductor that strives to make a living, Nigeria is the young girl whose mother sends to the street to beg for money hoping she doesn’t suffer any harm. Nigeria is the people living in the slumps and water fronts that become the Niger delta militants. Nigeria is the aba boy that the government has refused to empower to help in reviving our economy.

Nigeria is the Igbo mother that refuses to let her daughter marry her Yoruba lover and vice-versa, the Hausa man that believes leadership is meant for his people because they got a “leadership trophy” from the colonial masters on the platform of being the easiest tribe to penetrate.

Nigeria is you and Nigeria is me. Before our government officials occupied political positions, they were in the cycle of common civilians. I refuse to use the word “leaders” because Nigeria politics has indeed thought me that leadership is different from occupying a political post.

What are you doing to better the life of your fellow Nigerian? Aren’t you tired of the daily criticisms? Or the never ending uprising matters?

Well…

Happy independence to the Nigerians fighting to survive, to the Nigerians still in inward mental slavery of colonial domination, to the Nigerians who have fallen victim of the canker-worm called corruption and to the praying Nigerians who still believe and hope in a better Nigeria someday.

Life in Dark Ages

News Kashmir Exclusive

We all are aware that electricity is the very basic need of human life .But the Kashmir Valley is presenting a bleak outlook vis a vis electricity supply. The power crisis in Kashmir is reaching crippling proportions, with the supply-demand deficit reaching a record level that too at the start of harsh winter season . The prolonged spells of load shedding has become a norm in Kashmir Valley. With the result, life in kashmir has been made miserable and difficult to core.

On the other side the fact is that Kashmir possesses great capacity to harness hydro-electricity and does produce a great amount of electricity. But, inspite of that the power situation worsens as winter sets in and most of the areas of Kashmir are thrown into darkness with never ending   painful spells of load shedding. To add to the woes, the power generation in Kashmir, which is said to be capable of generating more than 20000 MW power, seems by and large a Delhi-controlled affair. The pulse on ground is that Kashmir is not getting due share of its hydroelectricity resources

From Srinagar to Bandipora to Qazigund every belt of Kashmir has been this winter hit more worse by loadshedding. Pertinently, the areas spread throughout central, north and south Kashmir are complaining about the crippling electricity woes.

Senior National Conference leader Advocate Nazir Malik, while talking to News Kashmir  stated : “Located in Gurez valley of Bandipora district in north Kashmir, the 330 megawatt Kishenganga Hydroelectric power project inaugurated sometime back has meant no positive change for the people of the district . As neither the legal power share of the Bandipora district nor employment to local youth in these hydroelectricity projects is provided and all rules and regulations are brazenly violated . Life in the Bandipora district has been brought to grinding halt  as a result of these often power cuts have adversely affected the business community and students . We are seeing the people losing their patience and angry protests erupting over power cuts , recently Residents of Hajin town Bandipora district blocked the Hajin-Srinagar road to protest against power crisis in the area, similar anger is witnessed from main Bandipora to other areas like Watapora Qazipora,Aloosa, Kaloosa Ashtangoo etc .”

On the other hand, anger is brewing north to south Kashmir over erratic power supply. As a matter of fact  complete protest shutdown is being observed in Awantipora town of south Kashmir’s Pulwama district against Power Development Department.

As per reports  a large number of locals  staged a protest demonstration against the erratic power supply near townhall Awantipora and raised slogans against the PDD.

In the township all shops and other business establishments are closed against unscheduled and long hours of power cuts in Awantipora and several adjoining villages for last one month, reports said.

Undoubtedly the load shedding scenario is giving painful times to people of Kashmir .

RISING IMMORALITY- A MATTER OF CONCERN

Malla Jameel  Ahmed

Kashmiri society derives its values and principles more often from the very religion they practice and scarcely to the culture that in its essence has seen a sharp decline due to the cultural invasion that usually in its initial stage seemed alien to us. The emergence of the foreign culture somehow becomes successful in finding a niche for its survival even after having a detrimental effect on the society. The families and the parents trying to instil the true values in a pursuit of organising their children’s to face the future challenges and overcome the problems is seen in every sphere of the society nowadays. The race of giving their children a world class education which primarily is argued with the notion of rise in competition level in the education sector but are reasonably driven with the societal competitions that has deep rooted their tendencies of being seen as a superior or equal if not inferior. This blind race has made a deep impact in our society as the childrens who are pure from all these things finds themselves entangled for none of their fault. Sparing the parents whom could not afford such level of education for their children does not reflect any sense of importance to others even if their contribution towards the society in other terms are highly admissible. If following the above narrative, one can deduce that the society has lost its level of understanding and reached to the point where it cannot differentiate between as to what is wrong and what is right. The point of immorality that is a hot topic nowadays with the advent of recent episodes that took place in this once called land of pirs and sufis or one may say land of pure. Immorality is seen by many people as a phenomenal approach by correlating it with the influence of cultures, poverty, westernization, lack of religious guidance and last but not the least the waning of fear of being punished or castigated for doing anything wrong. Immorality breeds declining of societal values or vice versa emulating into a societal collapse. The disintegration may be relatively abrupt or gradual but is doomed to happen until and unless necessary remedial and corrective measures are not taken into consideration with a systematic execution through various means. As far as our kashmiri society is concerned, we may attribute the rise of immorality to the following reasons:

  • Inefficacy of religious Institutions

The question of whether or not morality requires religions has been debated through the centuries from ancient times. Socrates has once said “ whether goodness is loved by the god because it is good or whether goodness is good because it is loved by the gods”. The religion is not the only precursor for the emergence of the morality but it is the most important reason for the inception of the morality in its true sense. Previously the religious institutions played a great role in imparting the knowledge on moral topics thereby inculcating a sense of respect and empathy for others, self control and moral discipline fostering fairness and opportunities for moral reasoning. However, in the recent times it has been seen that the grip of the religious Institutions have somehow diminished almost to the level of zero and have become devoid of the purpose for which they were supposed to be adhering. This diminutive status of religious Institution has transcended from their infighting  and internal tussles for power and control. The culture of debates in the religious Institutions were considered an offensive act thereby ruling out all the means of coming to any kind of conscience among the masses. Resultantly, nowadays the sermons given in the religious Institution are not paid heed to and are not taken seriously as the orators themselves are not well informed/versed with the reasons prompting the youths to resort to such immoral activities. The best way as is always pioneered is to identify the root cause of evil that is perpetuating within the society, only then you can eradicate it and the same thing is applicable to immorality which could be addressed only by striking the right cord and specifically targeting the reasons for its upsurge by correlating them with the real life day to day experiences substantiated with the scientific basis and its effect on the society.

  • Lack of parental guidance.

Most basic components of conscience which includes a sense of guilt, capability to be empathic , ability to distinguish between right and wrong are developed at the age of 5 or 6 among children and are flourished with the years to come. Parents act as most constant tool for appropriate character development. Parents also assist by exposure to examples of behaviours that negate their own views of positive values and virtues. However in todays times , the same has taken over by the new phenomenon of association of happiness of children with the material things . Intending to make their children happy, parents out of love and societal norms give them expensive gift, but one thing the parents forget that the children’s have a very curious mind and they usually don’t get amazed by the quality of the gift but by the quantity. They start a very peculiar learning of judging themselves and others based on the quantity and possessions of the gift. This material attachment in the coming years do more harm which can extend to the punishments. The urge for more and more leads them to the path of resorting to immoral activities. It is high time for parents to shun their ego and remove the dust from their eyes, only then they can see the faults in their parenting.

  • Exploitation of Unemployed youths

Unemployment is the situation of actively looking for employment but not being employed.  Unemployment can spur psychological spur such as anxiety, depression, lack of confidence, huge amount of stress. Unemployment is the major source of ill wills in the society. Unemployment brings a societal gap where an unemployed youth finds themselves lagging behind in every sphere of the life. This divide increases with every passing day and in a search of finding a suitable means of the livelihood, they end up on wrong end. There are many groups in the society that are always ready to exploit the vulnerabilities of unemployed youth for their own benefits and the innocent youths fell prey to these kind of traps which ultimately make their life miserable. Our Kashmir valley is no exception to this kind of curse, not only the limitation of jobs in government but the non-availability/existence of private sector has added more to our woes and has enhanced the miseries altogether. The need of an hour is to explore the means of facilitating the creation of jobs through which the already depressed youth can find a sustainable means of livelihood. Entrepreneurship is one great idea, but is only limited to papers and has lot of loopholes. The unemployed youth enthusiastically trying to set up a income generating means ends up with a great dissatisfaction and are left in lurch after getting dejected from every quarter.  To address the problem, single window system is to be created in every government Institution which will suffice the need of un-employed youths, thereby reducing the time required to get the clearances from the government organisations.

  • Poverty

Poverty in itself is immoral, unjust and oppressive as it is marauds the basic values of humanity and its continuation like wealth provides an avenue for certain temptations to come our way. Unequal distribution of wealth has created this menace and due to the policies created by the so called intellectual pygmies in the present dispensation “the rich is getting richer and the poor is getting poorer”. Poverty is one of the precincts of the rising immorality within our society as it is hard for the youths of present times to digest the thing that he is coming from a poor background and he should limit his desires. Instead, the generating of leverage from false proposition ultimately leads him to the disaster. The Claws of poverty are long and it is therefore no surprise that these problems are found among group who are in desperate struggle among poverty.

  • Un-controlled access to internet

The recent event that took place in this region can be set as a best example as to how this boon has emerged as a bane. The un-interrupted use of social networking sites has created a sense of delirium among the youths and are at the verge of getting addicted to such things. The use of social networking sites may seem unproblematic in its initial days but it attains a status of  inseparable part which becomes hard to take off. Further providing the internet services on cheap services has made the internet accessible to everyone and the service providers are providing the network facilities with internet features at quite lower rates that their previous fixed rates. No age bar is kept on the subscription/availing the services internet facilities. As such, the children’s are becoming the ultimate casualties for the irresponsible behaviour of the internet service providers.

In the end, if one try to draw inference, the rise of immoral activities is a coupled breakdown of economic, cultural and social Institution with a sole aim of destroying the societal fabric and need to be addressed as soon as possible.

As is rightly said by Salahudin Ayubi (Liberator of the Jerusalem)

“if you want to destroy any nation without war, make adultery and nudity common in the young generation”.

India- Pakistan Deadlock

As the valley of Kashmir is simmering with almost daily killings  in an unprecedented wave of surge in militancy  the India- Pakistan relations are on everyday basis  hitting rock bottom thus making possibility of peace a remote possibility .All this is mostly having adverse impact on Kashmir scenario.

India recently rejected Pakistan’s proposal for  talks on Kashmir and asserted that it would like to discuss aspects related to cross-border terrorism which are central to the current situation in Jammu and Kashmir.

Over past some time, India has  expressed his willingness to talk  to Islamabad but maintained Pakistan has no locus standi in addressing any aspect of the situation in Jammu and Kashmir+ , which is an internal matter of India, except to put an end to cross-border terrorism  and infiltration.

Indias central point has been that Since aspects related to cross-border terrorism  are central to the current situation in J&K, we have proposed that discussions between the two countries  be focused on them.

While as Pakistan maintains that resolution of Kashmir dispute is key to peace, and has maintained that it will lend all moral, diplomatic and political support to the cause and struggle of Kashmir.

In nutshell, India-Pakistan cold relations can are not only hurting  peace and prosperity of entire region and make Kashmir a hotbed of bloodshed .

Besides that B.Ed Teacher Trainees of Central University of Kashmir celebrated Children’s Day on November 14 in collaboration with Govt Higher Secondary School Jawahar Nagar and Govt. Jawaharlal Nehru, fondly called ‘Chacha Nehru’ was born this day, that is November 14, in 1889. ‘Chachaji’ or Jawaharlal Nehru was known for his love for children which is why his birthday on November 14 is celebrated each year as Children’s Day. “The children of today will make the India of tomorrow. The way we bring them up will determine the future of the country,” Jawaharlal Nehru has remarked, On Children’s Day, chocolates etc were distributed among children.
In the school, it was a day wherein fun and frolic dominated, after the grind and rigour of academics in the morning. The teachers presented a light-hearted assembly dedicated to their students. They entertained the students with a brain-teasing quiz, a thought provoking speech by Principal Ma’am, a short spoof on the quirks of our students, a soulful songs Naats by students.

Downtown Srinagar is the best place for women in the world : Mehreen Amin

Mehreen Amin  is shining example of  how determination, dreams can be turned in to reality  This Downtown young girl established Srinagar’s first female only gym near the famous Islamia College .

In an exclusive interview with News Kashmir, she talks to Rameez Makhdoomi.

How did you get the idea of starting all exclusive women Gym?

I had some health issues and had joined fitness center for women in Delhi, I got an idea to start same here and I was propelled to give pragmatic shape to my dreams when I had awful experience in unisex gym under male trainers feeling uncomfortable. Despite hailing from Downtown I never thought I would start it from here. My father, brother initially did not support my idea, they wanted me to invest in any other ideas rather than all exclusive women gym. Finally my mother’s great support and unrelenting determination of mine paved way for me to give my dream actual shape. I was passing from here and got to know about unoccupied space and the landlord cooperated like anything.

Media usually tags Downtown under negative headlines, did you ever feel fear ?

I have no fear working in Downtown, the local boys have on overall paradigm helped me like anything with their great cooperation and support. Downtown is one of the best places in world for women. They told me women in their household face different  health issues and they definitely need such gym. Here no one comes for figure Maintenance  as is wrong perception but in today fast world we have thyroid, diabetes and due to rampant  fast and junk food use the obesity related issues have flared up. This Gym offers hope to women to fight their health issues and stay fit.

How has been the response so far?

The response has been overwhelming with grace of Allah. The tremendous support of local populace has made this much success possible.

The world is usually difficult for women, did you ever feel it?

Yes there were usually taunts from some that my initiative is bound to collapse, but with my determination and firm support of family I stood like rock and the support of building owner was always immense. In first few days I used to get some fake feedback but with time the realistic feedback had poured like anything. Here women in presence of women trainers openly discuss their issues , feel comfortable and give positive feedback.

Do you feel such all exclusive women gyms should be established in other parts of Kashmir valley as well?

The unrealistic and false vibes we have developed that women and girls will not join all exclusive women gyms and fitness centers has to fall apart, I plan to start these all exclusive women gyms in other parts of Kashmir valley as well and it is my dream.

How is the cooperation from other women?

There are  very few who pass taunts as like men, women too are diverse in nature. The overall response from women is quite heartwarming and I would say quite awesome cooperation.

Since you have seen work atmosphere in cities like Delhi, do you feel Downtown Srinagar is better for women?

Downtown Srinagar is one of the best places for women in world in terms of safety and other things . I leave late in evening and never has anyone passed any comments on me I am proud to be women from Downtown.

Do  we here in Kashmir dearth of women fitness trainers?

Yes without doubt I believe we have to go a long way in terms of getting atleast the bare number of women trainers and I hope parents encourage their girls towards fitness related realms.

Does the upheavals in the our part of world impact your working?

I respect the strike calls and sentiment of masses and I reschedule the working norms like such that we overcome the lost time.

What are the specific problems for which women join your fitness center?

Today many young women are grappling with problems like PCOD which acts as irritant in  birth mechanism and Doctors accordingly advise them exercise and also weight issues is another thing. Women has to cater  so many things from family to her profession and she needs exercise, gyming more than men need it. Here in presence of women trainers being an exclusive women gym they feel comfortable and it logically also thus respects religious aspects.

What is your message to other girls who dream big ?

My message is fight for your rights and never lose hope. We should always stay calm and learn the art of seeing every storm in Composed way. I once again want to via your esteemed medium thank the boys of Downtown for their great support.

And the Mayor is…….

News Kashmir

In a significant development for the volatile Kashmir valley , the former National Conference leader Junaid Azim Mattu, who quit the party sometime back to contest the urban local body polls in Jammu and Kashmir, was elected Mayor of the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) on Tuesday, 6 November, 2018 ,  with the support from the BJP and the Peoples Conference.

It is worth mentioning Mr Mattu secured 40 votes while Congress candidate for the mayoral post Ghulam Rasool Hajam got 26 votes in the 74-member SMC, Commissioner of the civic body Peer Hafizullah told PTI.

Mr Mattu resigned from the primary membership of the National Conference (NC) in September after the party decided not to contest the urban local body polls till the Centre made clear its position on Article 35-A of the Constitution, which has been challenged before the Supreme Court. The other prominent local party of the Kashmir People’s Democratic Party too had boycotted Municipal polls citing same reasons.

Junaid Azam Mattu was a prominent face in media due to his excellent writing and speaking skills. He started writing a widely regarded weekly column called ‘HOPE’ for the local English daily Greater Kashmir. The first column titled ‘Hopelessness is a Sin’ was published on November 6th, 2011

As a matter of fact , He contested the SMC election as Independent from four wards, winning from three of them and was announced as the mayoral candidate by Peoples Conference chairman Sajad Gani Lone hours after the election results were declared on October 20.

It is worth pointing out here that the Congress emerged as the single largest party in the SMC with 16 seats but fell way short of 38, the number of seats required to take control of the corporation.

While the Peoples Conference had four, the BJP had five candidates elected to the corporation. There are 53 Independent corporators.

Mr Lone, who was a minister in the PDP-BJP coalition government in Jammu and Kashmir from the BJP quota, is seen as instrumental in garnering support for Mr Mattu’s election, along with rebel PDP lawmaker and influential Shia leader Imran Raza Ansari.

However, Mr Mattu’s election as Mayor of the SMC has been clouded by remarks of Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satya Pal Malik during an interview to a private TV channel last month.

The pulse on ground zero is that voices hope that Junaid Mattu will change the face of historical Srinagar city towards betterment, which over the past few decades has seen bad governance destroying the beauty of city.

Junaid immediately tweeted : “Unfortunately most of our internal drainage systems are choked and hence dysfunctional. It is both an infrastructural as well as a management issue and will require a two pronged resolution. We have to resolve this issue permanently and effectively.”

One hopes Junaid Azam Mattu will change the direction of Srinagar in a Positive manner.
