The Rising Tide of Materialism in Kashmir, cover story 20 January 2025

The Rising Tide of Materialism in Kashmir: A Looming Concern
News Kashmir Analysis
Materialism, a philosophical ideology that prioritizes the pursuit of wealth and possessions, has become a pervasive force in modern society. In Kashmir, once renowned for its rich Sufi heritage and non-materialistic culture, the allure of materialism has taken hold, threatening to erode the region’s moral fabric.
Key philosophers and social scientists have long warned of the dangers of materialism, describing it as a vice that destroys social cohesion and fosters emptiness. Compulsive consumption, a hallmark of materialism, has become a pressing issue in Kashmir, where the relentless pursuit of wealth and status has led to a surge in vices such as drug addiction and suicide.
Alarming statistics reveal that Jammu and Kashmir has become a hub for drug-related issues, with huge number of people affected. The demon of suicide is also on the rise, with youth being disproportionately affected. The root cause of these issues lies in the unchecked growth of materialism, which has created a culture of greed and dissatisfaction.
Even our sacred professions like Education and health have become much materialism based.
As the people of Kashmir, it is imperative that we recognize the destructive nature of materialism and take collective action to mitigate its effects. We must rediscover the values of our rich cultural heritage and prioritize the pursuit of happiness and fulfillment over the accumulation of wealth and possessions.
We have also made our social gathering a talk of all materialistic things, and only those are given preference who have money. It is a matter of shame that we are neglecting our poor relatives and friends.
The expert pulse is that we have  the multiple disadvantages of materialism:
Materialism has far-reaching consequences that can negatively impact individuals and society as a whole. The relentless pursuit of wealth and possessions can lead to stress, anxiety, and depression. Materialism also fosters a sense of emptiness and dissatisfaction, as individuals constantly crave more. Furthermore, it can damage relationships, erode empathy, and promote social comparison and competition. Ultimately, materialism can distract us from what truly brings fulfillment and happiness, leading to a shallow and unfulfilling existence.
The realities urge  for all voices of sanity  to come together and brainstorm solutions to end the urge of materialism. By doing so, we can save ourselves and our society from the devastating consequences of terrible phenomenon materialism.

National Girl Child Day, editorial 20 January 2025

National Girl Child Day
Girl child is very special gift from God.
January 24th is celebrated as National Girl Child Day in India, a day dedicated to promoting girls’ rights, education, and empowerment. This observance was initiated by the Ministry of Women and Child Development in 2008 to address the declining child sex ratio and promote equality for girls.
In India, girls often face significant challenges, including limited access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities. The country’s skewed sex ratio, with 918 girls per 1000 boys (according to the 2011 census), highlights the severity of the issue. National Girl Child Day aims to raise awareness about these issues and promote a culture that values and supports girls.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi lead Government has been keenly looking after the welfare of Girl Child and taking several measures in this regard.
The government has launched various initiatives to promote girls’ education, health, and empowerment. These include programs like Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (Save the Girl Child, Educate the Girl Child), which aims to address the declining child sex ratio and promote girls’ education. Other initiatives focus on providing scholarships, healthcare services, and vocational training to girls.
On National Girl Child Day, organizations, schools, and communities across India come together to organize events, rallies, and campaigns to promote girls’ rights and empowerment. These efforts help to create a supportive environment that encourages girls to pursue their dreams and reach their full potential.
As we observe National Girl Child Day, let us reaffirm our commitment to promoting girls’ empowerment and creating a society that values and supports girls. By working together, we can build a brighter future for India’s girls and contribute to a more equitable and just society.
We should take pledge to do everything  to look after the welfare of Girl child in India.

Reservation Debate in Jammu and Kashmir writes Ramiz Bhat, opinion 30 December 2024 issue.

The Reservation Debate in Jammu and Kashmir: Striking a Balance Between Equity and Merit!

Ramiz Bhat

ramizspeaks77@gmail.com

The reservation policy in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) has become a deeply contentious issue, sparking widespread debates and protest outside the CM’s residence. Prominent political figures, including National Conference (NC) Member of Parliament Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi and People’s Democratic Party (PDP) leader Waheed Ur Rehman Para, have actively joined the protest. The protest, heavily supported by students, reflect growing concerns that the current reservation framework is unfairly skewed against open merit candidates, potentially undermining meritocracy and equitable access to opportunities.

In India, the reservation system was initially conceived to address systemic discrimination and promote socio-economic upliftment among marginalized communities such as Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), and Other Backward Classes (OBC). The aim was to bridge societal gaps by reserving seats in educational institutions and government jobs for these communities. In J&K, however, the reservation policies have taken a unique trajectory due to the region’s distinct demographic composition and political sensitivities. While the system was initially implemented with a vision of promoting inclusivity and uplifting underrepresented groups, recent amendments have drastically altered the reservation framework, causing significant concern among various segments of society.

One of the most debated changes in the policy has been the introduction of a 10% reservation for the Pahari community, combined with an increase in OBC reservations to 8%. These adjustments have collectively raised the total reservation quota to nearly 70%, leaving only 30% of opportunities available for open merit candidates. This shift has triggered widespread discontent, particularly among students and critics who argue that such a large reserved quota encroaches on the already limited opportunities for general category candidates. Many believe that this imbalance compromises merit-based selection processes and could ultimately undermine the principle of equal access to opportunities for all.

The dramatic increase in reservations has sparked intense protests, especially among students who aspire to pursue higher education and secure government employment. The discontent reached a boiling point when NC leader Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi led a protest outside the Chief Minister’s residence, expressing solidarity with open merit students. Mehdi emphasized that while reservations are crucial for achieving social equity, they should not come at the cost of meritocracy. He argued that if merit-based opportunities are diminished, it could jeopardize the future of deserving candidates from the general category. Similarly, PDP leader Waheed Ur Rehman Para has actively participated in these protests, calling for a more balanced and fair approach to reservation policies. Para has urged the government to conduct a time-bound review of the policy to ensure that open merit students are not sidelined. His involvement highlights the bipartisan nature of the concern surrounding the reservation system and its potential negative impact on the youth of J&K.

The current reservation framework has far-reaching implications for open merit students. With 70% of seats now reserved for various categories, the competition for the remaining 30% has become extremely intense. As a result, students with exceptional academic achievements are finding it increasingly difficult to secure admission or employment in their desired fields. This situation has caused considerable frustration, as many hardworking and academically successful students feel that their efforts are not being fairly rewarded. Critics argue that this growing disparity between reserved and open merit seats not only demoralizes students but also raises questions about the efficiency and fairness of the selection process. Moreover, there are concerns that such a system may unintentionally foster dependency among marginalized communities, rather than empowering them to compete on equal terms. By allocating the majority of opportunities to reserved categories, the system risks diminishing the motivation for academic and professional excellence, which could ultimately lower the overall quality of candidates across various sectors.

In response to the growing public dissatisfaction, the Chief Minister of J&K has pledged to review the reservation policy within six months. This assurance signals the government’s willingness to engage with stakeholders and consider adjustments to create a more balanced framework. The government aims to develop a policy that protects the principles of affirmative action while also addressing the concerns of open merit students. The review process will be critical in navigating the complexities of balancing social equity with meritocracy. A transparent, inclusive, and consultative approach will be necessary to ensure that the revised policy reflects the aspirations of all communities and promotes fairness and justice.

The reservation policy in Jammu and Kashmir is at a pivotal moment, with profound implications for the region’s youth and their future opportunities. The active participation of influential political leaders such as Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi and Waheed Ur Rehman Para underscores the urgency of addressing the growing discontent surrounding the current framework. As the government prepares to undertake a comprehensive review, it faces the delicate challenge of ensuring social justice while safeguarding merit-based opportunities. Striking this balance will be crucial in shaping a policy that respects the aspirations of all students and paves the way for an equitable and progressive future for J&K.

Preserving Water Resources, editorial 30 December 2024 issue

Preserving Water Resources: An issue of Utmost Importance
Water is the foundation of life, and preserving this precious resource is crucial for the survival of our planet. Kashmir is among regions with rich water resources but dwindling of them due to human greed is matter of great happening. This depleting water resources is a matter of global worry. With the global population projected to reach 9.7 billion by 2050, the demand for water will continue to rise, exacerbating the already pressing issue of water scarcity. It is essential that we take immediate action to conserve and manage our water resources sustainably.
The importance of preserving water resources extends beyond mere survival; it has significant implications for the environment, economy, and human health. Water is a critical component of ecosystems, supporting biodiversity and regulating the climate. Moreover, water scarcity can lead to food shortages, economic instability, and increased risk of water-borne diseases. By conserving water, we can mitigate these risks and ensure a more sustainable future.
Effective water management strategies are vital to preserving our water resources. This includes implementing efficient irrigation systems, harvesting rainwater, and promoting water-saving practices in households and industries. Additionally, governments and organizations must invest in water infrastructure, protect watersheds, and enforce policies that prevent water pollution. By working together, we can reduce water waste, increase water productivity, and safeguard this precious resource for future generations.
Ultimately, preserving water resources requires a collective effort and a fundamental shift in our relationship with water. We must recognize the value of water, adopt sustainable practices, and prioritize its conservation. By doing so, we can ensure that this vital resource continues to support life, ecosystems, and economies for generations to come. The future of our planet depends on our ability to preserve and protect our water resources. We too in Kashmir should protect water resources.

Hopes From Year 2025 writes Faisal Khankashi, opinion 30 December 2024 issue

Hopes from Year 2025 – A Political and Knowledge-Based Perspective on Jammu and Kashmir
By Faisal Khankashi
As a proud citizen of the largest democracy in the world, India, and a native of Jammu and Kashmir—the Jewel of the Crown—I hold high hopes for 2025. This year, designated by the United Nations as the International Year of Cooperatives, underscores the global call for collaboration and unity in addressing social challenges. It offers a unique opportunity to reflect on the aspirations of Jammu and Kashmir, a land of unparalleled natural beauty, resilience, and potential.
Political Hopes for Jammu and Kashmir in 2025
1.Restoration of Statehood
One of the most anticipated political developments in Jammu and Kashmir is the restoration of its statehood. Since the revocation of Article 370 in 2019, the region has experienced significant structural changes. While the reorganization has brought opportunities for development, the people of J&K yearn for a return to full statehood, which will restore their sense of political dignity and empowerment.
In 2025, I hope for an inclusive dialogue between the people of Jammu and Kashmir and the central government, leading to a consensus on statehood restoration. This would not only strengthen India’s democratic ethos but also pave the way for a renewed trust between the region and the rest of the nation.
2.Strengthening Local Governance
Another political hope is the empowerment of local governance through Panchayati Raj institutions and the District Development Councils (DDCs). The successful functioning of these institutions can enhance participatory democracy, ensuring that the voices of the people are heard at the grassroots level.
In 2025, I envision increased devolution of powers to these local bodies, enabling them to address issues like education, healthcare, and infrastructure more effectively. This could foster a sense of ownership among the people and bridge the governance gap.
3.A Roadmap for Peace and Stability
Peace remains a fundamental aspiration for Jammu and Kashmir. In 2025, I hope for the continuation of efforts to bring an end to militancy and violence in the region. Strengthening security while promoting dialogue with all stakeholders—including youth, civil society, and political groups—will be crucial for creating an environment of trust and cooperation.
Diplomatic engagement with neighboring countries to address cross-border issues, coupled with economic and cultural exchanges, can significantly contribute to regional stability.
4.Inclusion in the National Political Framework
Another hope for 2025 is the greater representation of Jammu and Kashmir in national policymaking. As citizens of India, the voices of the people of J&K should be adequately reflected in Parliament and other forums. This can be achieved through increased participation of regional leaders in national politics and policies tailored to the unique needs of the region.
Knowledge-Based Development for Jammu and Kashmir
1.Education and Research Hubs
The year 2025 holds promise for the establishment of Jammu and Kashmir as a hub for education and research. With its strategic location and rich cultural heritage, the region has immense potential to attract students and scholars from across the world.
By investing in higher education, particularly in fields like environmental sciences, tourism, and medicine, Jammu and Kashmir can emerge as a knowledge leader. Institutions like the University of Kashmir and the Jammu University can play a pivotal role in fostering innovation and skill development.
2.Harnessing Renewable Energy
With the global focus on renewable energy in 2025, Jammu and Kashmir has the potential to become a leader in hydropower and solar energy. The region’s vast water resources can be utilized to generate clean energy, not only for local use but also for export to other parts of India.
Investments in green energy infrastructure can create jobs, reduce environmental degradation, and position J&K as a sustainable energy hub.
3.Leveraging Tourism for Cultural Exchange
Tourism, one of the mainstays of J&K’s economy, can become a catalyst for knowledge exchange. In 2025, I envision a focus on sustainable tourism that promotes the region’s rich history, art, and culture. Initiatives like international cultural festivals, eco-tourism projects, and heritage conservation can elevate the global profile of Jammu and Kashmir.
4.Promoting Technology and Startups
In 2025, the government can create a knowledge-based economy by promoting technology and innovation in Jammu and Kashmir. Establishing IT parks, fostering entrepreneurship, and providing digital infrastructure can empower the youth and create employment opportunities. Programs to support local startups, particularly in agriculture, handicrafts, and tourism, can transform the region into a hub of innovation.
Global Cooperation and the Role of Jammu and Kashmir
Jammu and Kashmir’s geopolitical significance positions it as a bridge for global cooperation. In 2025, the region can play a role in fostering understanding between India and its neighbors, acting as a symbol of unity amidst diversity. Peace in J&K can have a ripple effect, contributing to regional and global stability.
Conclusion
The year 2025 holds immense promise for Jammu and Kashmir. As we strive for political stability, economic growth, and knowledge-based development, it is essential to prioritize the aspirations and well-being of the people. Through inclusive policies, innovative solutions, and global cooperation, we can ensure that Jammu and Kashmir fulfills its potential as a beacon of hope, resilience, and progress in India and the world.
Let 2025 be the year when Jammu and Kashmir truly becomes a shining example of peace, prosperity, and progress for all.

Impressive remittances of India

Impressive remittances of India
At $129 billion, India’s remittances alone is nearly as much as the annual budgets of Pakistan ($67 billion) and Bangladesh ($68 billion) combined. It is also nearly double that of Mexico, which took the second spot on the highest remittances list.As per the latest figures compiled by World Bank economists, India, which topped the list of recipient countries for remittances in 2024, received an estimated inflow of $129 billion.
As a matter of fact, Remittances play a vital role in the economic development and stability of many countries, particularly in developing nations. These financial transfers from migrant workers to their families and communities back home provide a crucial source of income, supporting basic needs, education, healthcare, and entrepreneurship. Remittances also contribute significantly to the GDP of recipient countries, helping to reduce poverty, inequality, and unemployment. Furthermore, remittances promote financial inclusion, empower women, and foster economic growth, making them a vital component of international development efforts.
Mexico came second with $68 billion, China came third at $48 billion, the Philippines came fourth at $40 billion, and Pakistan came fifth at $33 billion.
India has steadily been receiving remittances of more than $100 billion each year for the last five years, except 2020 – when COVID-19 had peaked. That year India saw an inflow of $83 billion. The growth rate of remittances this year is estimated to be 5.8 per cent, compared to 1.2 per cent registered in 2023, according to a World Bank.
This is a great development for the country and should be taken as a very positive development.
