Brutalized South

News Kashmir Exclusive

South Kashmir over past few years has assumed the point of no return as it has emerged the epicenter of mayhem , violence, killings and protests. This year alone we have seen killing of huge number of civilians near encounter sites in South Kashmir.

As a matter of fact, South Kashmir four districts have bore worst brunt of violence .  Pertinently, The four districts of south Kashmir have witnessed a higher level of militancy-related violence in the first eight months of this year with 139 deaths.

According to data, at least 263 persons—civilians, militants and forces’ personnel—were killed in militancy-related incidents across the Valley in first eight months this year.

Of 263 causalities, south Kashmir’s four districts—Anantnag, Pulwama, Shopian and Kulgam—have borne the maximum brunt of violence with highest 139 deaths witnessed in the region alone.

On the other hand of the spectrum, the huge number of destructions, killings associated with large scale mayhem  has put the people of Kashmir in the enormous pain, to the extent with many now openly questioning the abnormal levels of bloodshed and especially the large number of youth killings this year in South Kashmir as fighters and civilians.

On the otherhand of the spectrum, Pain in Kashmir is now neither expressed by prose  nor poetry as words do not seem  to do any justice with what is going on. This bloodshed has disturbed mental balance and solace of heart. Even Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) has said that the suppression has become unbearable for the people in Kashmir. In this hour of tremendous grief, all the words and statements of condemnation and condolence sound very hollow at this scale of human tragedy that Kashmir is witnessing.

Gulzar Ahmed, a commoner states : “ South Kashmir is witnessing huge huge amount of bloodshed and devastation almost every day it is high time for each and every stakeholder to come forward and settle the burning issue of Kashmir once for all so that we do not see the painful bloodletting on daily basis . South Kashmir has been turned into a warzone and daily daily bloodshed does not augur well for any ”

The larger picture is that the continuous Bloodshed and violence has destroyed mental peace of common Kashmiris and also destroyed him or her on emotional levels, as loss of near and dear one means life-long trauma.

One hopes this brutalization of South Kashmir comes to abrupt end .

Save Human Hearts

Alarmingly enough, 9.4 million deaths each year, or 16.5% of all deaths can be attributed to  heart problems. If you are a shift worker, donating blood could be an easy way to reduce the risk of heart disease, says a study. The high incidence of heart disease seen in shift workers could be due to the tiredness resulting from the disruption to the body’s biological clock as jetlag has a severe effect on red blood cells. These effects can be counterbalanced by fresh, young red blood cells – making blood donations a potential therapy for shift workers, the findings showed.

Heart disease has an ugly face more die of heart disease than of AIDS and all cancers combined.

Worryingly, By 2020, heart disease will be the leading cause of death throughout the world.

“Blood donations in humans also stimulate the generation of new fresh erythrocytes. Therefore, blood donations on a regular basis might be a very simple measure to help decrease the cardiovascular risk in human shift workers,” said Margit Egg from University of Innsbruck in Austria.

The scientists worked on zebrafish (Danio rerio), a model organism which, like humans, is active during the day. The fish were subjected to alternate short (seven hour) and long (21 hour) days, resembling shift patterns common in industry

It was found that “jet-lagged” animals showed higher numbers of aged red blood cells, which accumulated in the blood vessels. “Normally there is a balance between newly produced red blood cells and old ones which are removed from the blood,” Egg noted. Old cells are less flexible and become stuck in the spleen and liver, where they are engulfed by white blood cells. Jetlag appears to disrupt this removal process. . Heart disease is the number one cause of death for both men and women in the United States, claiming approximately 1 million lives annually. So we should donate blood to save our heart.

We need to ensure proper diet and proper mechanisms to save human hearts from havoc.

Artist Should Have Broad Mindset : Arshad Sualeh

Kashmiri artist Arshad Sualeh is a prolific painter and has via his work made  Kashmir proud on global radar . He has recently bagged the master award of honour in the International Art Festival  at Jaipur organised by team Artistry International. The award was presented to Sualeh by Bollywood actors Anuradha Patel and Kanwaljeet Singh. He bagged the award for his outstanding work and lifetime experience.

In an exclusive interview with News Kashmir, Arshad Sualeh converses in-depth about his endeavors with Rameez Makhdoomi .

Tell us a bit about your childhood days and inclination towards painting ?

My childhood was spent in a learned and friendly environment as my father Mirza Mohammad Sualeh Baigh was an institution in himself having trained more than 300 artists in Paper Machie Art . since my early childhood days i had great love towards painting and used to sketch on different surfaces ranging from canvass to paper .There is an interesting story once I was beaten and scolded by my father as I  had used  charcoal and drawn huge sketches on government building and was reported by chowkidar .

Overall my father encouraged me greatly and witnessing my love for fine arts and got me enrolled in Fine Arts college to polish my love towards painting in more professional way .Fine arts is in my blood .

How was the transition in journey possible?

I had instinctive forces and qualities towards painting and love for fine arts was in my blood. I was self taught artist and I took some qualities from father as he was great artist and had  high degree of aesthetic  taste  and he had sense of coloring and  combination , shapes and drawing lines , composition and used to guide me those days and due to myself taught nature I used to paint diverse landscapes  . During my studies at primary and secondary school I always used to draw different sketches, drawings  and  paintings  and finally after I reached Music and Fine arts college I met my great teachers late Gayoor Hassan, late Shuja Sultan, Ma Mehboob and Shafiq Mirza . I was found of making big paintings and had different concepts within me and  I had great religious atmosphere in home and meanwhile when my brother  who is a doctor took me to Delhi and there at Iran cultural house I saw impressive Calligraphic  paintings combined with landscape probably by Mahmood fraschin, one of the great artists of Iran  . The painting touched my heart and I had calligraphic hand right from beginning so I tried to write different types of verses on paper and canvas .My grandfather Hakeem Akthar Ali was great calligrapher of Kashmir and he used to write down  different verses of holy Quran , Persian, Arabic  and  Urdu poetry in a magnificent calligraphic way .He possessed khati nakhoon ( Specific nail calligraphy ) as he has had preserved that nail and used to write verses of holy Quran , and different scripts and texts  . Accordingly  I started giving my calligraphic art a voice and thrust and started  painting Quranic calligraphic with landscape .

I have painted hundreds of calligraphic works .

What motivated you to calligraphy ?

I knew calligraphy very well . As I told you I had religious atmosphere at home and after being highly impressed by painting that I saw at Iran cultural house I started calligraphic paintings and Wama arsalnaka illa rahmatan lilAAalameen

was my first  painting calligraphic work. I have painted hundreds of calligraphic works . I had this urge to convey divine message of Almighty Allah  with the help of paintings because  I was stimulated  and impressed by Christian art with paintings of Mother Mary with child , virgin and child and Jesus Christ on cross . I got the idea that those artists from Italy and France  were influenced by Christianity and I was impressed and influenced by message of Holy Quran so I started  writing and draw different script of holy Quran in form of paintings so that I  can convey  divine message of Allah in form of paintings .There are 3000 each of my Quranic reproductions of paintings painted  by me in USA, SAUDI ARABIA AND CANADA .

You work on four subjects , what are those ?

I work on Quranic Calligraphy Paintings combined with landscape  , Abstract, semi  abstract figurative work paintings , Realistic Paintings, Surrealistic paintings .  .Mostly kashmiris love  Quranic calligraphic with landscape as Muslims are majority here and love Islam  and  I paint thus more Quranic calligraphy , -there are two benefits -one being verse of holy Quran and other it being painting with beautifully painted .

You started your journey with ?

I started my journey with realistic paintings and realistic portraits  as basically I was portrait artist and painted scores of portraitures  but left it as it involved huge amount of time  as I do not have much time  now as I have to teach as well fine arts to teachers at cluster university . Whatsoever leisure time I have I try to divert It to calligraphy although I also love realistic art.

I have participated in  different types of contests and also participated more than thirty art workshops in India and also in many  international workshops and exhibitions. Different people have collected my work as  their own personnel memorable collection .

Challenges faced by artist especially in Kashmir ?

There are so many  challenges faced by artist as our emotions are different . Artist’s world is all together a different  world and temperament difficult to  understand  . Sometimes I  might be so close to you that you will think Arshad has some problem  as you will think he wants to get something . When we connect eyes with other human we get very close and other person should have sense to understand . Here in kashmir we do not have favorable atmosphere as it is often filled with stress , pain and turbulence. Sometimes I want to display paintings but we feel short of art lovers  and no body to appreciate or purchase our work. We cannot just survive by token appreciation. Artist must  have congenial atmosphere, art lovers which is unfortunately absent here . We also tragically do not have art galleries here .

Does Art lead to Spirituality ?

Art basically leads to spirituality and divinity .If an artist is perfect,  sincere in his work  he or she will achieve automatically achieve spirituality .Whenever we paint nature like moonset, sunset, waterfall, gushing water, Greenland  it automatically leads us to divinity, spirituality  close to God .One of the names of Allah is ya Musaviro ( one who is artist ) and he has created  human as best of creations . Every art like poetry,  painting, music , sculpture we try to recreate and get fully stimulated by beauty of almighty Allah  .

Is Painting your first love?

I mostly do paintings and can do installations and paintings has always been my first love.

Your favourite artists ?

Bikash BAHATACHRYA is among my favourties , Jatin Das is also among my favourties as he is my teacher and I have contributed my works to his personnel museum and his paintings have been appreciated allover world. Ram Kumar, MF Hussaein,  Ramkrashinan, Bhaskaran, Mr Balan etc are my other favouries .

Some families discourage their children towards fine arts, your take?

Those families that discourage their children from art do not have aesthetic taste and love for diverse arts ranging from poetry to painting as they falsely think it will yield noting while in reality it pays huge dividends . If our children have tendency towards art we should fully encourage them as it is such a wonderful thing .

What would be your message to young artists ?

Hard work leads to destination if somebody has tendency for art he or should  understand it is not easy but so difficult . One has to work with dedication. So one has to tolerate and pass through many difficulties with full calm and composure and have broad mindset . One great painting does not make you artist as it is continuous process . We need to have large heart to stay relevant .

Your take on infrastructure with reference to art like paintings outhere ?

Infrastructure like galleries are lacking here .Everywhere in world there are platforms for arts and in India we have academies and galleries . We have art and culture academy here in Kashmir and they work good but unfortunately we do not have art galleries outhere

Noted awards you have received ?

I have been conferred three state awards and one national award from  Raskala manch  Haryana , international award by government  of Iran Ministry of Heritage and culture and   and one more international award I got Masters award of honor recently in Jaipur Rajasthan in international art festival  .I have received scores of local awards .

Have you painted on turmoil and others things you would like to share ?

I have painted so much of paintings on bloodshed, pain and humans in distress . Art can also help to come out of depression,. Doctors give art therapy like give something to draw and paint. We do not have unfortunately have exposure . Most of the people want to take this subject but are worried about sustenance but once we do with dedication we can live like king .

“Despite requests to not visit the spot till thorough search is done for explosives, several civilians visited the encounter site immediately after the operation. While they were there, some explosive substance went off, resulting in on spot death of a civilian and injuries to several others,” the official said.

Condemnations to the Kulgam tragedy poured from every side .

President of Anjuamn Shari Shian and senior separatist leader Aga Syed Hasan Almosvi Alsafvi has condemned the Kulgam killings and has termed it as “worst form of oppression.”

He stated :

“New Delhi India is using muscular power to crush the ongoing struggle.

The Kulgam massacre has pained every soul in Kashmir and it needs to be condemned at all cost. People of Kashmir can’t stay away from the ongoing struggle and their resolve can’t be broken up through muscular power. We have sacrificed everything for our cause and we will take it to the logical conclusion,” a spokesman of Anjuman quoted Aga Syed Hassan as having said in a statement.

Mirwaiz Umer Farooq  took to social media platform Twitter and tweeted : As we mourn the Martydom of Sabzar Sofi &Asif Gojri, each day we are losing educated youth to the obduracy &arrogance of NewDelhi who does not want to resolve Kashmir dispute but instead resorts to subjugation& repression, forcing our youth to a path of armed resistance& martyrdom.

On the otherhand, Former Chief Minister Mehbooba  Mufti told the Union Home Minister that in the past when bilateral relations improved, Jammu and Kashmir not only witnessed an era of minimal violence but also reconciliation and people’s active participation in democratic and developmental processes.

Expressing concern over the prevailing situation in the state, the PDP president also urged the Home Minister to ensure that civilian deaths and collateral damage during security operations are avoided at all costs.

The magnitude of the bloodshed is such that nearly 12 civilians and 35 militants have lost their lives in the first 25 days of October . Reality calls on all the stakeholders to initiate a meaningful dialogue to end this ugly and painful cycle of bloodshed in kashmir that is resulting in youth annihilation.

Immediate steps needed to trim the bloodshed are needed so as to heal humanity in kashmir.

#MeToo movement empowering women to share their stories

News Kashmir Exclusive

Me Too movement is proving to be great boon in making women worldwide to speak against the injustice they have faced at the hands of men.  The Me Too movement (or #MeToo movement), with many local and international alternatives, is a movement against sexual harassment and sexual assault  #MeToo spread virally in October 2017 as a hashtag used on social media in an attempt to demonstrate the widespread prevalence of sexual assault and harassment, especially in the workplace.[ It followed soon after the sexual misconduct allegations against Harvey Weinstein. Tarana Burke, an American social activist and community organizer, began using the phrase “Me Too” as early as 2006, and the phrase was later popularized by American actress Alyssa Milano, on Twitter in 2017. Milano encouraged victims of sexual harassment to tweet about it and “give people a sense of the magnitude of the problem”. This was met with success that included but was not limited to high-profile posts from several American celebrities, including Gwyneth Paltrow, Ashley Judd,Jennifer Lawrence, and Uma Thurman.

The Bollywood actor who helped trigger the #MeToo movement in India challenging sexual harassment and abuse sees it as part of her religious education after an experience 10 years ago she said effectively ended her career. “I feel God used me to start something which had to happen,” Tanushree Dutta told Reuters. “All these women had this buried deep in their hearts out of shame.”

Dutta, who said she was inspired by Christianity, Buddhism, yoga and the #MeToo movement in the United States, said last month that prominent actor Nana Patekar had sexually harassed her on the set of a movie in 2008. Patekar has denied wrongdoing.

The loud voice of justice raised by women via me too is paying dividends.

MJ Akbar, who faces multiple charges of sexual harassment, on Wednesday resigned as Union minister of state for external affairs.

“Since I have decided to seek justice in a court of law in my personal capacity, I deem it appropriate to step down from office and challenge false accusations levied against me, also in a personal capacity, (sic)” he said in a statement.

“I have, therefore, tendered my resignation from the office of minister of state for external affairs. I am deeply grateful to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi and to the external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj for the opportunity they gave me to serve my country,” he added.

Senior journalist and The owner and Editor –in-Chief News Kashmir Farzana Mumtaz too recently gave a passionate outlook on the injustices faced by women in kashmir .Free Press Kashmir  described  her  struggle as –  A typical example of what Kashmiri women journalists go through while working on the field would be the life of Farzana Mumtaz. From family struggles to societal stigmas to professional challenges, she has faced it all and yet continues to grow and inspire many young journalists.

Scholarly Sacrifice!

News Kashmir Exclusive

Research Scholar turned militant Mannan Wani, one of the top men of Hizbul Mujahideen in Kashmir Valley, was killed in an encounter with forces in Kupwara on Thursday . Clashes broke out in some pockets of the valley  after the news spread.

Pertinently, taking a cue from the aftermath of Burhan Wani’s killing, internet service has been snapped and all the educational institutions have been closed in the Kupwara district as precautionary measure.

The encounter at Langate — roughly 80 km from state capital Srinagar. Once a research scholar of the Aligarh Muslim University, Mannan Wani had joined the Hizbul Mujahideen earlier this year. He had gone missing from the Uttar Pradesh university, where he had been studying Applied Geology. A few days later, his photograph, holding what appeared to be a AK assault rifle, appeared on social media.

Former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti  tweeted : Today a PhD scholar chose death over life & was killed in an encounter. His death is entirely our loss as we are losing young educated boys everyday.

On the otherhand of spectrum, as Kashmir lost in Handwara Gunbattle wonderful scholar DR. Mannan Wani PHD from world famous Aligarh Muslim University the serenity is filled with mourning and sense of loss.

It is a great loss for a small nation like Kashmir to lose scholars at this pace. He could have contributed immensely to field of knowledge in strife hit Kashmir had life and situation been kind.

We need to think, introspect, strategize where we as nation stand.

Relatedly, senior profreedom leader Mirwaiz Umer Farooq tweeted :

Alas! heard the tragic news of #MananWani’s Martyrdom and of his associates! Deeply pained that we lost a budding intellectual and writer like him, fighting for the of cause of self-determination.JRL appeals to people to observe a complete #Shutdown tomorrow to pay homage to him.

Whole valley has burst into sadness, gloom after hearing the news of death of Scholar Mannan wani. Taking to Social Media outlet Facebook Research Scholar Mushtaq ul Haq Ahmad Sikander wrote :” Death has knocked again at my door. Rest in Peace my friend Manaan Wani. I failed to convince you to return back from violent path. You have left me with nothing but tears and separation. We will inshallah meet in Jannah. Love you moon and back.”

Undoubtedly the loss of young scholars in Kashmir to gun is seen as biggest jolt to the knowledge pool of Kashmir and both India and Pakistan should take steps to see an end to this mayhem.

Jawaharnagar arm Loot Fallout

In dramatic turn of events few days back, SPO, Adil Bashir, ran away with seven rifles and a pistol from the official residence of a PDP MLA , Aijaz Mir, from Jawahar Nagar area. This episode has created ripples in the security apparatus and goes on to prove how grave the nature of the overall situation in Kashmir is.

It has had its own repercussions. “Henceforth no unit/district SSP shall deploy any SPO for personal security officer (PSO) duties,” the order, issued by additional director general of police (ADGP) Munir Khan, said. Besides, Range DIGs have been asked to furnish list of all SPOs to the headquarters by October 5. “In case any SPO does not report back, honorarium may not be released and nominal roll of such SPOs be furnished to this headquarters so that their disengagement orders are issued,” reads the order,

On the otherhand, Khan said there were two reasons behind the move: to prevent accidental fire by these SPOs as they are not trained to shoot and to prevent any untoward incident like the one that occurred at Jawhar Nagar. On their part, the police have constituted a Special Investigation Team with superintendent of police South Srinagar as its head to investigate Jawahar Nagar case.

The SIT will investigate how the plan to loot weapons from the official residence of a legislator in Srinagar was executed by Adil Bashir, a resident of Zainapora Shopian, who has since joined Hizbul Mujahideen. Without a doubt the Arm loot at Jawahar Nagar by SPO proves the gravity of the situation .

ELECTION OR SELECTION?

News Kashmir Exclusive

These are unprecedented  times  in the electoral history of Jammu and Kashmir, the Bharatiya Janata Party is likely to take control of, at least, seven municipal committees in Kashmir Valley unopposed in the elections.

Pertinently, This surprising and out of box development comes after the two main regional parties — National Conference and Peoples Democratic Party — decided to boycott the urban local body polls in protest against the Centre’s plan to scrap the special status of the state especially fiddling with the article 35 a.

All this has made election process look an affair of selection rather than election and heavily dented its credibility . It is worth noting that at least 60 candidates of the BJP have won their seats unopposed, and a majority of them fall in the volatile region of south Kashmir where, out of 20 municipalities in five districts, only four are likely to go to polls. The municipalities which are likely to be headed by BJP candidates are Devsar, Qazigund, Pahalgam, and Ashmuqam in south Kashmir, and Shopian and Sopore towns of north Kashmir.

“We have 350 candidates contesting in 600 municipal wards spread across 10 districts of the Valley. Our 60 candidates have won without fighting the elections. Out of them, six are Kashmiri Pandits,” Altaf Thakur, the BJP’s spokesperson in Srinagar, said on Tuesday at his office.

“After the first phase of nominations for elections was over, the rush of the candidates increased. We had to select among dozens of candidates. People have reposed faith in democracy and we will live up to their expectations,” Thakur said.

As a matter of fact, the 624 wards in Jammu and Kashmir are scheduled to go for the four-phase polls from 8 to 16 October. With elections lacking participation the main popular party touch experts and commoners are voicing concerns.

Mushtaq Ul Haq Ahmad Sikander, A PROMINENT political analyst stated : “ Local bodies elections are essential for a vibrant democracy. But in Kashmir the process has always been disrupted. With the intervention of the BJP  led center in J&K the space for regional parties has been curtailed. BJP joined the coalition government only to deceive and marginalise the regional parties. Now when both National conference and people’s democratic party have boycotted the elections BJP is adamant to go ahead with the process in which most seats would be won unopposed. Some of its members particularly the pandits in Jammu have filed nominations for Kashmir who in no way are representative of the wards or constituencies. The BJP  again is trying to choke the space and marginalise the regional parties, that will have disastrous ramifications for the future. This election in most cases has no representative character.”

Gandhi is so relevant …..

Rameez Makhdoomi

Gandhi born on 2 october 1869 has remained a towering personality of human history. He not only lead the Indian freedom struggle to success but has had his positive influence all over humanity. Gandhism is a body of ideas that describes the inspiration, vision and the life work of Mohandas Gandhi. It is particularly associated with his contributions to the idea of nonviolent resistance, sometimes also called civil resistance. The two pillars of Gandhism are truth and non-violence.

A bullet from fascist silenced Gandhi in 1948 but it could not silence his great vision and positive  influence. Today when world is witness to hate between countries across continents , growing hate between societies, communal bigotry, ever rising crimes against women and minorities the ever refreshing  vision of  Gandhi that revenge, hate has only destruction as its product and only love, ethics  can heal are proving so correct .

In the Law of Our Species Gandhi writes these great words “ I am not a visionary. I claim to be a practical idealist. The religion of nonviolence is not meant merely for the rishis and saints. It is meant for the common people as well. Nonviolence is the law of our species as violence is the law of the brute. The spirit lies dormant in the brute and he knows no law but that of physical might. The dignity of man requires obedience to a higher law-to the strength of the spirit.

The rishis who discovered the law of nonviolence in the midst of violence were greater geniuses than Newton. They were themselves known the use of arms, they realized their uselessness, and taught a weary world that its salvation lay not through violence but through nonviolence.

Today humanity finds itself trapped in million issues of violent discourse , saga of hate, extremism  violence and thus echo the words of Gandhi “A coward is incapable of exhibiting love; it is the prerogative of the brave.

When world currently is witnessing ugly conflicts between India and Pakistan, North and Soutrh Korea, USA and Russia , Iran and Saudi Arabia thus destroying humanity with violence from Kashmir, Syria, Iraq to Yemen , Libya , Congo etc . Airstrikes. Militia wars  and mighty weapons are only consuming innocents in hundreds thus proving Gandhi ever so right that eye for eye and vision of hate is self destructive monster for us .

As a student who has studied Gandhi I am of firm opinion that Gandhi would have never approved the route of nationalism by barrel of gun being imposed by Indian state in Kashmir. India and Indians don’t have to be after west and its ideals they have Gandhi to set the things right.

Gandhi would rightly point out that we need to change ourselves to bring positive change but the way modern humans are trying to be demigods and seeing not their inner faults but just of others it is destroying world. Thus Gandhi would aptly state : “Our greatest ability as humans is not to change the world; but to change ourselves”

The vision of Gandhi that power that speaks through barrel of gun will never win hearts is proving right , the argument that violence will only destroy us is proved so right by raised to ground cities and cultures in Middle East, South Asia and Africa . The power of Gandhian argument that hate, arrogance, lack of self introspection will lead us astray is always a righteous path .

Let us on the this Gandhijyanti pledge to shun hate . Gandhi Inspired and will continue to inspire while his killer Godse expired and vision vise too will always remain expired .

To conclude in the words of great man I appeal to larger humanity that It has always been a mystery to me how men can feel themselves honoured by the humiliation of their fellow beings and when we leave this tendency to win a argument rather a person’s heart world will be gorgeous place to exist .
